Cat-Griz showdown opens league play for each team
BOZEMAN, Montana – February 11, 2022 – There are a couple of things Montana State women's tennis coach Jon Reeves knows about his team's match against in-state and Big Sky rival Montana on Sunday.
He knows that if his team is completely healthy it will mark the first such occasion this season. He knows the players in MSU's lineup on Sunday will experience an intense rivalry, with every likelihood of rising to the occasion. And he knows the match is likely to be closely-contested.
"Here we are in middle of February and still haven't our full team together for a match," he said. "It looks like that might be the case this weekend, too. But (Montana) has had some of the same issues. It doesn't matter, because in the Cat-Griz rivalry no matter who looks better on paper or who is healthier, it's almost always close and it's always one that everyone gets up for."
Marta Garcia-Reboredo and Felicia Jayasaputra pace the Bobcats as two of the team's four players with three singles wins on the season. Garcia-Reboredo, a freshman, is 3-2 at No. 1, while Jayasaputra stands 3-3 split between No. 2 (1-2) and No. 3 (2-1). Freshman Andrew Cuquerella (3-5 split between three different lineup positions) and sophomore Jazmin Lerman (3-3 at the bottom two ladder spots) are the others.
In spite of the disjointed nature of his team's personnel situation due to injuries, Reeves is pleased with the squad's preparation leading into the crucial weekend showdown. "Practice has been really good," Reeves said. "We had a team conversation about preparing for competition with a different six (players in the lineup) every week. We've gotten some really good work in with both singles and doubles and we're feeling better than we have some weeks, for sure."
The Bobcats stand 3-7 on the season, while Montana is 2-2. Sunday's match, which begins at 10 am in the Bobcat-Anderson Tennis Center, is the Big Sky opener for both teams.
