The Montana State men’s track and field team ranks among the best in the nation at the Division I level with indoor season conference championship meets sitting roughly a month away
NEW ORLEANS, La. – The Montana State men's track and field team ranks among the best in the nation at the Division I level with indoor season conference championship meets sitting roughly a month away.
The first installment of the NCAA Division I Men's Indoor Track & Field National TFRI, as released on Monday by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA), listed Montana State 27th overall. No marks from previous seasons have been used, which means the objective list is compiled solely of current marks from the 2022 indoor track & field season.
MSU nearly earned a national ranking among the top 25 teams behind a variety of high performers this season.
Duncan Hamilton owns the Bobcats' top two marks among national contenders. Hamilton owns the fastest time in the men's 3,000 across the nation with his converted time of 7:48.20 (altitude adjusted from 8:05.48). He also holds the eighth fastest mile time with a converted 3:56.89 (4:05.20).
Ben Perrin is nationally ranked in three different events for Montana State. Perrin has the 21st time in the country in the 5,000 (13:41.10), the 28th best mark in the 3,000 (7:48.20) and sits 35th in the mile (4:01.84).
Colby Wilson has had a standout year in the pole vault for Montana State and it reflects in the national rankings. Wilson has cleared the 17th highest mark in Division I track and field this year with his personal-best mark of 17-02.75 (5.25m).
Montana State is the second highest ranked Big Sky Conference team in the National TFRI trailing Northern Arizona as the Lumberjacks are ranked fifth in the country.
MSU sits fifth in the Mountain Region TFRI Team Summary Index with a score of 175.80. The Bobcats only sit behind Texas Tech (518.04), BYU (333.25) and NAU (298.77) which rank among the top six in the national rankings, as well as Air Force (259.35).
The Bobcats have multiple individuals with top eight marks among competitors in the Mountain Region.
Hamilton ranks first in the 3,000 and third in the mile among athletes on teams in the Mountain Region. Perrin sits fifth in the 3,000, sixth in the mile and 10th in the 5,000. Wilson has the fourth best clearance in the pole vault among competitors in the region.
MSU's Drake Schneider holds top-10 marks in two events. Schneider has the fastest time in the 400 (47.86) and eighth fastest in the 200 (21.59). Will Anderson joins Schneider in the 400 with the seventh fastest mark on the list with his best time of 49.01 this season.
The Bobcats are represented in the 800 by Chris Bianchini who has the eighth fastest mark in the 800 of 1:53.31. MSU's best time in the 4x400 relay of 3:20.54 ran by Anderson, Noah Majerus, Bianchini and Schneider is the eighth fastest among Mountain Region squads.
Montana State has the week off from competition. The Bobcats return to action from Feb. 4-5 as the MSU program travels to Spokane to participate in two meets hosted by Washington State.
