Duncan Hamilton will have the opportunity to participate in two of the biggest meets in NCAA competition over a four-day span
BOZEMAN, Mont. – Duncan Hamilton will have the opportunity to participate in two of the biggest meets in NCAA competition over a four-day span. Hamilton's appearances at the NCAA Division I Track and Field and Cross Country Championships come in an unusual format for a first-time qualifier in each.
The Bozeman native will first appear in the Men's Track and Field Championship on Friday at the Randal Tyson Track Center in Fayetteville, Arkansas, when he runs in the men's mile preliminary races. Hamilton is slated to race in the second of two prelim mile races which starts at 1 p.m. MT. The top four runners in each heat, plus the next two best times completed, advance to the finals race on Saturday that take place at the same time.
Hamilton then travels to Stillwater, Oklahoma, to run in the NCAA Cross Country Championships on Monday, March 15. Hamilton will participate in a field of roughly 240 runners that advanced to the national meet at Oklahoma State's Cross Country Course. The men's field of runners are scheduled to open the 10-kilometer race at approximately 11:40 a.m. MT.
"It's exciting," Hamilton said of the unusual task of competing in back-to-back national meets. "I think it'll be a crazy, jam-packed weekend. I'm super glad that both of these seasons were able to happen. After an outdoor season that never happened, it's nice to be able to make it to a national meet."
Hamilton completed MSU's third fastest mile race, and fourth under the four-minute threshold, on Feb. 19 at MSU's Bobcat Bonus meet that took place in Worthington Arena. His time of 3 minutes, 57.30 seconds was the 11th fastest among Division I men's runners during the indoor season.
Following the various scratches leading into the meet, Hamilton enters the NCAA Championship with the seventh fastest time among the 16 competitors that will participate in the preliminary round.
The Bozeman native is set to be the 10th Bobcat on the men's team to ever compete in the NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships. Miguel Galeana (1998), Patrick Casey (2010), Cristian Soratos (2015) and Diego Leon (2018) all previously participated in the mile at the meet. Soratos holds MSU's all-time men's highest indoor finish of second when he placed runner-up behind Oregon's Edward Cheserak with a time of 3:59.86 in Fayetteville.
Hamilton will be credited with Second Team All-America honors by competing in the preliminaries. If he's able to qualify for the finals, he can become a First Team All-American by placing among the top eight finishers.
The Montana State junior finished runner-up at the Big Sky Conference Cross Country Championship in Riverdale, Utah, on Feb. 27. His performance, which was less than three seconds behind champion Abdihamid Nur – whose team qualified for the NCAA meet – set Hamilton up in a qualifying position for the national championship event. Hamilton was one of 38 individuals to be selected to participate in the cross country championship through an automatic qualifier and at-large selection process. Thirty-one men's teams were selected to participate in the championship.
A top-40 individual finish would award Hamilton All-America accolades in cross country. The Bobcat men's program has previously had two All-Americans. Shannon Butler finished as an All-American back-to-back seasons in 1989 and 1990, while current coach Lyle Weese placed 19th to claim an All-America effort at the 2002 NCAA Championships.
