Cats Fall to Cowgirls in Home Opener

Wyoming handed the Montana State women’s tennis team a 7-0 setback on Friday afternoon in the Bobcats’ home opener in the Anderson Tennis Center.
Wyoming handed the Montana State women's tennis team a 7-0 setback on Friday afternoon in the Bobcats' home opener in the Anderson Tennis Center.
It marked the second loss to the Cowgirls this season as Wyoming defeated the Bobcats 6-1 at the Tulsa-Hurricane Invitational in early January.
"Wyoming is a team I enjoy having our team compete against because of their level of play and their enthusiasm as a team," said MSU head coach Jon Reeves. "We played them just a month ago. Overall, we are better in all areas since that first match with Wyoming."
Wyoming opened the contest winning the doubles point with victories at Nos. 2 and 3. The marquee match-up at No. 1 doubles went the distance with the Cowgirls pulling out the win 7-6 taking the tiebreaker 7-5.
The Cowgirls clinched the match at No.2 singles as Oleksandra Balaba defeated Linnea Fristam 6-3, 6-3.
"Today our team was able to identify specific areas where they are having success, where they need to improve, and where they have made their improvements," Reeves commented. "It is a big step because we are beginning to have clarity for each players overall focus on their game. We have taken some losses because we are playing a difficult non-conference schedule. Our ladies are handling it well because they know we are focused on improving day to day and not focused on the overall record. I feel we must play this quality of teams to be prepared to play with the top teams in the Big Sky."
The Bobcats will host Seattle U on Saturday at 10 a.m. in the BATC.
