Montana State men's tennis team closes fall
BOZEMAN, Montana – Chase Stoner's three service breaks became the break the Blue team needed Saturday, when it beat the White team 4-2 in a Montana State men's tennis intrasquad scrimmage at the Bobcat-Anderson Tennis Center in Bozeman.
Stoner broke Bradley Buckland's serve three times in the decisive third set to push his Blue squad into a 3-2 lead, and moments later freshman Andrew Suver finished off classmate Jacob Huppin to clinch the Blue's victory.
"It was so much fun," said Stoner, Montana State's only senior, of the team's only major scrimmage of the fall. "We haven't had the chance to compete in a similar scenario to the season, so it was fun to battle with the guys."
Montana State's most experienced players led the way with outstanding performances on Saturday. Sophomore Nejc Sitar upended classmate Marcos Zelver 6-3, 6-4, while junior Joaquin Espinoza topped freshman Jakob Mosvold 6-1, 6-4. Stoner's crucial three-set win then set up Suver's clinching match.
"I think the upperclassmen definitely brought it today," said Bobcat coach Trey Morris. "I think the whole group was extremely competitive. That's been something that's missing this fall without competing against other schools, so I think the guys were jumping at the opportunity to really compete. I think across the board on every court, no matter what the score was, I think the guys honestly competed very, very hard."
Stoner said his service return was important in taking the third set from Buckland. His first break came at 1-0, his second at 5-3, then he answered a break by Buckland to clinch the clinching set. "I was focusing on my return," he said, "always trying to move forward. Because I'm shorter I have to rely on the return more."
The teams split Saturday's doubles matches. Sitar and Mosvold earned a 6-2 win over Zelver and Huppin, while Buckland and Espinoza edged Manuel Monteiro and Suver 7-6. Buckland and Espinoza won the tie-breaker 7-2.
After Saturday's scrimmage the Bobcats close the fall with practices on Monday and Tuesday. The team reconvenes in the spring semester for the 2021 season.
