Bobcat Veterans Picked as MSU Men's Tennis Captains

Senior Grant Wood, Junior Joaquin Espinoza selected as captains
BOZEMAN, Montana – A pair of Bobcat veterans have been elected team captains for the 2020 men's tennis season, Montana State coach Trey Morris has announced. Junior Joaquin Espinoza and senior Grant Wood will serve as MSU captains throughout the 2020 spring season. Morris said he likes the presence both student-athletes offer in all phases.
"I think Grant and Joaquin are a good balance to represent the team as captains," Morris said. "They both had good fall seasons and they've both been in the program for a number of years."
A junior from La Paz, Bolivia, Espinoza is the team's top returner in terms of wins. He finished 2019 with an 8-7 mark playing most of the season at No. 3 singles, and was 4-11 in doubles play. As a freshman in 2018 he was 9-7 in singles competition, primarily at No. 5. "Something that's great about Joaquin is his work ethic," Morris said. "Not only does he play near the top of the lineup but he is also one of the guys that pushes his teammates forward with his work on and off the court, in the classroom, really in everything he does. He's a strong leader by example, especially for the younger players."
Wood is one of two seniors on the Bobcat squad, and Morris likes his sense of perspective. "Grant had a pretty solid fall, but one of the things that sets him apart is his experience playing collegiate tennis," Morris said. "This is his senior year so he's been there, done that. Additionally he's shown himself to be someone who can stand up and really lead the guys and speak on their behalf, as well. He has good communication skills with myself, he can translate what the guys are thinking in a way that helps the team."
Montana State split its opening matches last weekend, falling to Boise State but topping Whitman. The team returns to action on February 7 hosting Seattle.
