Kelly Hooper took second place and the Bobcats wrapped up play in Anaconda Tuesday
ANACONDA, Mont. – Montana State golf completed play at the Battle at Old Works on Tuesday, Sept. 17, by taking fourth place in the team standings at Old Works Golf Course. The Bobcats were boosted by senior Kelly Hooper's second-place honors.
MSU wrapped play by carding a 54-hole tournament score of 902 strokes (295-301-306). The total was the fifth best mark in program history.
The Bobcats finished three strokes behind North Dakota State in the team standings. Cal Poly won the team title with 885 strokes.
"I'm happy with our three days here in Anaconda," Montana State head coach Brittany Basye said. "We showed consistency over the course of three rounds which gives us some positive momentum going into our next three tournaments. I saw some positive things from all nine players. I'm looking forward to seeing all of the girls continue to work on their games this fall."
Hooper topped her previous best appearance in the Battle at Old Works. After finishing in a tie for third as a sophomore at the 2017 meet, Hooper placed alone in second on Tuesday by recording a 1-over-par 217. She picked up her fifth top-five finish of her collegiate career by shooting a third round 75. Hooper owns one career victory at the 2018 GCU Invitational.
The Spokane, Wash., native had four bogeys in a stretch of seven holes to drop to fifth during the final round, but she bounced back to shoot 1-under in her final six holes.
"Today was rough," Hooper said. "The weather was kind of crazy, but I just tried to hang on and really wanted to compete for the title. I didn't know what anybody else on the course was doing, so I tried my best to keep making pars and birdies."
Hooper's 217 was the best score of her collegiate career, beating her previous best set at the 2017 Battle at Old Works by a stroke. Her tally is the fourth lowest in program history.
"It was really special being here at Old Works," Hooper said. "It's kind of like a home course for us since we've had the tournament here the last three years. I love coming here and it was really special to play well and get second in my last first tournament (as a senior) this year."
Delaney Elliott and Lucia Prieto Romano each finished in the top 20 of the individual standings with three consistent rounds. Elliott fired a 228 (73-77-78) and Prieto Romano shot a 229 (77-75-77) over the two-day span. Prieto Romano's total was the best for her during her collegiate career.
Coral Schulz and Annika Danenhauer rounded out MSU's lineup. Schulz tied for 28th overall with a 233 (80-77-76) and Annika Danenhauer (75-81-86) tied for 47th. Schulz and Elliott had two birdies apiece on Tuesday to lead MSU.
Sofia Rodriguez Todd led the Bobcats' group of individuals by tying for 28th overall at 233 strokes (77-75-81). Hailey Oster tied for 32nd by shooting a 235 (82-71-82) which is her best tournament total of her collegiate career. Lilly Navarre carded a 77 Tuesday and tied for 34th at 236. Hannah Rosanova completed her Bobcat debut by tying for 56th with a 254.
Montana State competes in its second tournament of the fall slate next weekend. The Bobcats are scheduled to travel to Fort Collins, Colo., to participate in Colorado State's Ptarmigan Ram Classic beginning on Sept. 23.
