Bobcats Finalize Cross Country and Track & Field Rosters Ahead of 2019-20 Season

The MSU men's and women's rosters add 11 student-athletes ahead of the new athletic year
BOZEMAN, Mont. – Fall semester classes begin in one month at Montana State University. With the academic year near its start date, the Bobcat cross country and track and field teams have finalized their rosters for the upcoming 2019-20 school year.
Set to join the men's roster are Cantor Coverdell, Ian Fosdick, Zach Pickett and Carter Slade. Joining the women's roster are A'lena Chaney, Mary Corbett, Mikaela Ducharme, Megan Good, Zoe Johnson, Lindsay McGree and Zoe Waddell.
"It's really exciting to have our roster finalized heading into the fall," said Lyle Weese, MSU's director of track and field and cross country. "We've added some incredible student-athletes and we're looking forward to what they can do during their time at Montana State."
Cantor Coverdell | Fairfield, Mont. | Fairfield HS | Throws
Cantor Coverdell graduated from Fairfield High School in 2017 and was a three-sport standout for the Eagles. He capped his prep career with a strong showing at the MHSA Class B State Meet. Coverdell earned his third consecutive individual championship in the triple jump with a personal-best leap of 45 feet, 5.25 inches. He completed lifetime bests to take second in both the javelin (185-05) and the long jump (21-10.25), while he also finished third in the discus (157-04). He was a member of the Eagles' gold-medal winning 4x100 relay squad and helped guide Fairfield to the Class B team title. Coverdell had over 30 first-place marks over the course of his senior year and was a four-time qualifier for the state meet.
Ian Fosdick | Mahtomedi, Minn. | Mahtomedi HS | Jumps
Ian Fosdick completed his prep career in June by earning an individual state title. Fosdick earned the gold medal in the triple jump at the MSHSL Class AA State Track and Field Championships, representing the biggest class of schools in Minnesota, with a lifetime-best mark of 48-01. He also took 13th at the meet in the long jump. As a senior at Mahtomedi, Fosdick earned section championships in both events, while he claimed his third conference title in the triple jump and took second in the long jump at the Metro East Conference meet. Fosdick picked up a bronze medal in the triple jump at the MSHSL Championships as a junior. He was a top-four finisher in four events for the Zephyrs at their conference meet that year.
Zach Pickett | Escalon, Calif. | Escalon HS | Sprints
Zach Pickett graduated from Escalon High School in 2019 after competing for the Cougars' track and field team for four seasons. Pickett advanced to the Sac Joaquin Section Masters meet two straight years, competing twice in the 400 and once in the 200. Specializing in the sprints, Pickett earned a career-best fourth-place finish in the 400 as a senior, narrowly missing out on a trip to the CIF state championships. His final prep season was highlighted by 10 first-place showings between the 200 and 400. His personal bests are 22.86 seconds and 49.06 seconds, respectively. He also has experience running both the 4x100 and 4x400 relay, as well as in the high jump.
Carter Slade | Billings, Mont. | Billings West HS | Throws
Carter Slade made big strides as a senior for Billings West High School and claimed gold in two events at the MHSA Class AA Championships. Slade improved his personal best by seven feet in the shot put and 14 feet in the discus between his junior and senior seasons. The Golden Bears' thrower captured lifetime bests in shot put (54-03) and discus (169-04) at the state meet en route to taking first in each. Slade ended his prep career by taking first in the discus in five straight meets and first in the shot put four consecutive times. As a junior, Slade made his first MHSA Class AA appearance and placed third in the discus.
"We were fortunate to have a lot of prospective student-athletes that contacted us late," said Weese. "There were a few that had breakout senior years and were people that could add to our team right away. We hope they can make an immediate impact even though they may have come late in the recruiting process."
A'lena Chaney | Calabasas, Calif. | Serra HS | Jumps
A'lena Chaney joins the Bobcats' jumps program with state championship and National Junior Olympic Championship experience. Chaney recently completed her prep career by advancing to her first CIF State Championship meet as a member of the Serra High squad. She placed eighth in the finals following her preliminaries jump of 18-10.50 which was a lifetime best. Chaney has also competed on the track and field club scene, advancing to the USATF Hershey National Junior Olympic Championships last summer. She competed in the 100 hurdles, long jump and triple jump at the meet. Her personal best in the 100 hurdles is 14.86 seconds and in the triple jump is 37-10.
Mary Corbett | Bozeman, Mont. | Bozeman HS | Distance/Multis
Mary Corbett made consecutive trips to the MHSA Class AA State Track and Field Championships in multiple events for Bozeman High School. As a junior, Corbett appeared at the state meet in five events which included a bronze medal as part of the Hawks' 4x400 relay squad. She again participated in five events at the Class AA Championships as a senior, this time placing in the top eight in all five. She earned a gold medal in the 4x400 relay and bronze in the 4x100 relay, while she placed an individual high fifth place in the 400. Her personal bests in events all came during her senior campaign and include the 200 (26.15), 400 (59.56), 300 hurdles (46.90) and long jump (16-03.50). Corbett also has experience running cross country. She ran as a senior for the Hawks and completed a season-best time of 24:29.0 in the 5K.
Mikaela Ducharme | Polson, Mont. | Polson HS | Jumps
Mikaela Ducharme made four trips to the MHSA Class A Championships while competing for Polson High School. She made her first podium appearance as a junior when she placed third in the triple jump. Ducharme advanced to the Class A meet in both the long jump and triple jump two straight years. She completed personal bests during her senior season in the 300 hurdles (52.63), long jump (17-03.50) and triple jump (35-10). Ducharme earned over 10 first-place showings during her time competing for the Pirates.
Megan Good | San Juan Capistrano, Calif. | San Juan Hills HS | Saddleback College | Distance
Megan Good joins the Bobcats after competing at Saddleback College the previous two years. Good ran cross country and specialized in mid-distance events for the Gauchos. She completed a personal-best time of 19:14.1 in the 5K during the cross country season as a sophomore, while she placed in the top 10 in three of six meets. She captured personal bests during the track and field season this past spring in the 800 (2:13.96) and the 1,500 (4:49.74). Good won the CCCA SoCal Regional Championship in the 1,500 and took second in the 800.
Zoe Johnson | Eagle, Idaho | Eagle HS | Jumps
Zoe Johnson completed her prep career for Eagle High School with a gold medal at the IHSAA 5A Championships. Johnson tied her lifetime best to take first in the high jump at a height of 5-04. She's topped that mark twice this summer by clearing 5-05 and 5-6. She recently took sixth at the National Junior Olympic Championships in the event and finished first in the Region 11 Championships in June, which were held in Bozeman. Johnson made four trips to the IHSAA 5A meet in the high jump. During her senior campaign, Johnson placed first in the high jump nine times.
Lindsay McGree | Butte, Mont. | Butte Central Catholic | Jumps
Lindsay McGree competed for four seasons for Butte Central Catholic and graduated in 2019. McGree qualified for the Class A Track and Field Championships each year for the Maroons. She finished her prep career as a back-to-back state champion in the long jump, setting a personal best in the event as a senior of 17-10.50. She made the podium for the first time as a sophomore when she took third in the long jump at the state meet. McGree also made the Class A Championships in the 100 each season and competed in the triple jump twice.
Zoe Waddell | Bozeman, Mont. | Bozeman HS | Throws
Zoe Waddell made a big stride from her junior to senior seasons to help lead her to her first state championship appearance. Graduating from Bozeman High School this past spring, Waddell advanced to the MHSA Class AA Championships in both the discus and shot put. She placed fourth in the discus and eighth in the shot put behind a lifetime-best mark of 35-09.25. She set her lifetime best in the discus of 124-09 and had seven first-place finishes during the regular season. Prior to the Class AA championships, Waddell placed first in the discus at Bozeman's divisionals meet, topping her previous best finish of seventh. She improved her lifetime best in the shot put by eight feet and her discus by 20 feet over the course of a year.
"We were excited about the women that joined the team late in the year, very similar to the men," said Weese. "In particular, A'lena Chaney and Zoe Johnson had great finishes to their senior track seasons. I think we've got a couple athletes that can contribute right away in different events."
