The Montana State golf team travels to Maricopa, Arizona, for its final tournament ahead of the Big Sky Championship. The Bobcats will participate in the Wyoming Cowgirl Classic starting on Monday, April 8, at 7:30 a.m. MDT at the Ak-Chin Southern Dunes Golf Club.
The Bobcats will be represented by five golfers in the Cowgirl Classic. Junior Delaney Elliott will play from the No. 1 slot and be followed by Kelly Hooper, Sofia Rodriguez Todd, Coral Schulz and Clare Dittemore.
The Wyoming-hosted tournament has been featured on the Bobcats' schedule for several years. That includes their showing a year ago in which MSU took 16th out of 20 in the team standings. Hooper led the lineup by tying for 15th overall in the individual standings, while MSU's 54-hole round score of 910 was its second-best total of the season.
"We're excited to play Ak-Chin again," MSU head coach Brittany Basye said. "Everyone has seen this course except Sofia. We are looking forward to one more tournament before conference and we're hoping this is a good warmup and final prep before the Big Sky Championship.
Montana State participates in a 20-team tournament field in Maricopa. The field will play 36 holes Monday and complete action with the final 18 holes to begin at 7:30 a.m. on Tuesday. Golfers will compete on a course set with a par 72 and 6,131-yard layout. The tournament features fellow Big Sky members Eastern Washington, Montana, Northern Arizona, Northern Colorado, Portland State and Southern Utah.
The Bobcats' lineup consists of their top five scorers this season.
Hooper has two top-five finishes this year and a team-best 76.61 strokes per average mark. Elliott has been MSU's top scorer the previous two meets Her runner-up showing at the Red Rocks Invitational and top-30 finish at the Fresno State Classic has improved her scoring average to 76.70 per round. Schulz is the Bobcats' third-best scorer in their lineup with a 77.91 mark and has accumulated three top-20 showings. Rodriguez Todd (78.88) and Dittemore (79.43) round out MSU's top five with each holding a top-20 finish this season.
"We need to focus on finishing our rounds out strong and scoring 100 yards and in," Basye said. "This is the five we will take to the conference tournament as well. I am confident this five will play well this week and have a good Big Sky Championship."
Following the conclusion of the Wyoming Cowgirl Classic, Montana State will begin its final preparations for the Big Sky Championship. The conference tournament takes place from April 19-21 in Boulder City, Nevada.
