Wyatt Thompson-Siporen and McKenna Ramsay highlight the track and field program's award winners for the indoor season
The Montana State track and field program announced its award winners for the 2018-19 indoor season. The Bobcats chose winners for awards which included Top Gun, Outstanding Track Athlete, Outstanding Field Athlete, Most Improved and Outstanding Freshman.
The Top Gun Award selections for the indoor season were juniors McKenna Ramsay and Wyatt Thompson-Siporen. The Top Gun individual selections were based off the person on each team that scored the most points at the Big Sky Conference meet.
Ramsay claimed her first individual Big Sky gold medal at the conference meet in Bozeman when she crossed the line in the women's 400-meter run with a time of 55.09 seconds. She also earned another podium appearance in the 200 when she took bronze in the event with a time of 24.76. Her converted 400 mark is the fourth fastest in program history and her converted 200 time is the sixth fastest.
She also was the anchor leg of MSU's gold-medal winning 4x400 relay. That group's altitude and track size adjusted time of 3:44.34 is the second fastest all-time in school history.
Thompson-Siporen won his first gold medal as a Bobcat as he took first in the men's pole vault. He cleared 16 feet, 2 inches (4.93) in the event. He opened the championships by earning a silver medal in the heptathlon. His final score of 5,229 points was the fourth most in program history, improving on a top 10 mark he'd achieved at the start of the New Year. Thompson-Siporen's best pole vault of 16-09.25 during the season is tied for the third best on MSU's all-time top 10 list.
Ramsay was selected as the women's Outstanding Track Athlete of the season, while Samuel Bloom was chosen as the men's team's Outstanding Track Athlete. Bloom made a Big Sky podium as an individual for the first time as he took second in the 800. He finished second in the race by less than a second by crossing the line in 1:53.31.
Bloom improved his all-time top 10 mark during the indoor season by registering a mark of 1:50.35 and moved up to sixth on the list. He also served as the opening leg of the Bobcats' gold medal distance medley relay squad. Their converted final time of 9:52.67 is the eighth fastest all-time.
The Outstanding Field Athlete awards went to Thompson-Siporen on the men's side and Lucy Corbett on the women's team.
Corbett earned a gold medal in her Big Sky Championship debut by taking first in the women's high jump. She cleared her Bobcat-best height of 5 feet, 9.25 inches (1.76m) to claim the top honors. Her mark of 5-09.25 propelled her into a tie for second all-time in the event in program history. She was named the Big Sky Freshman of the Year following the conclusion of the meet.
Earning MSU's Most Improved honors on the men's side were Alex Lewis and Drake Schneider. Truanne Roginske and Courtney Stromme were chosen for the women's team.
Lewis became an all-conference selection for the first time in his collegiate career by taking third overall in the men's long jump. His mark of 24-08.50 was a lifetime best and also made program history. The leap by Lewis broke Montana State track and field's longest standing indoor record in its record book. Lewis propelled ahead of Ken Riedl as the school record holder, passing Riedl's mark of 24-08 he set in 1983. He also finished sixth in the triple jump final at the Big Sky meet with a leap of 47-04.25. Drake Schneider earned his first indoor individual all-conference honors at the conference championships. He picked up the bronze medal in the 400 final, after a preliminaries appearance converted time of 48.05 which is fourth fastest in program history. Schneider was also awarded gold on the Bobcats' school-record breaking 4x400 relay squad at the meet.
Roginske broke the school record in the 60 dash during the season which now sits at 7.56 seconds. She took third in the event at the conference championships, while she also took seventh in the 200 and ninth in both the long jump and triple jump. The MSU senior moved to seventh in the 200 (24.66), seventh in the long jump (18-07.25) and fourth in the triple jump (38-03.25) in the Bobcat record book. Stromme made her way to ninth all-time during the year in the 60 with a lifetime-best mark of 7.77 seconds. At the conference meet, Stromme finished 10th overall in the 200. She also won a gold medal as the opening leg of MSU's 4x400 relay squad.
Corbett added the team's Outstanding Freshman award to her accolades. Henry Adams was tabbed the men's team's Outstanding Freshman. Adams took eighth in the 60 hurdles finals at the Big Sky Championships. He tied the program's 10th best mark in the event all-time during the season with a mark of 8.26 seconds.
