Just two tournaments stand between Montana State and the Big Sky Conference Golf Championship in Boulder City, Nev. The Bobcats will participate in the Fresno State Classic starting Monday in Fresno, Calif., as they gear up for the conference tournament which begins on April 19.
"It's a new tournament for us," Montana State head coach Brittany Basye said. "We're excited to play Copper River and get to see some other teams that we don't usually see. We want to continue with the momentum of last weekend and keep scoring. We need to tighten up some short game stuff and have some confidence in our putting."
The Bobcats are fresh off an appearance at the Red Rocks Invitational in Cornville, Ariz., that came to a close on March 24. Junior Delaney Elliott earned the top individual finish by an MSU golfer as she tied for second with a three-round score of 4-under-par 209. Not only was it Elliott's top showing of her collegiate career, her 54-hole tournament score was the second-best mark in program history.
Elliott will golf in the Bobcats' No. 1 slot at the Fresno State Classic. She'll be followed by Kelly Hooper, Sofia Rodriguez Todd, Lucia Prieto Romano and Coral Schulz in the lineup.
Hooper is currently MSU's leader in scoring average with 76.75 strokes per round this season. Rodriguez Todd carded a 12-over 225 at the Red Rocks Invite – which was her best tournament mark of her career – as she led the MSU lineup by tying for 53rd overall. Prieto Romano had her best 54-hole tournament appearance as a Bobcat at the meet hosted by NAU, shooting a 232 over three rounds. Schulz rounds out the MSU lineup for the upcoming tournament as she sits third on the team in average with a 77.85 scoring mark.
The Bobcats compete at Copper River Country Club for the first time when tournament play begins at 9:45 a.m. MDT on Monday, April 1. The 14-team tournament field will golf 36 holes on Monday and the remaining 18 holes with a 9:45 a.m. shotgun start on Tuesday. The course features a 6,200-yard and par 72 layout.
Participating in a field of 14 teams including Big Sky members Portland State and Southern Utah, Montana State looks to continue to build in preparation for the conference meet. The Bobcats are scheduled to compete in the Wyoming Cowgirl Classic in Arizona from April 7-9 in their final outing of the regular season. The two meets will be significant for the Bobcats to get prepared over the next couple of weeks.
"Being outside and playing on green grass is huge of course for us," Basye said. "We won't be able to play here in Bozeman at all this spring season. We need to really work hard when we do get out on the golf course."
The 15th annual Fresno State will have live results available throughout the tournament. Fans of the meet can follow along on golfstatresults.com.
