The Montana State golf team makes its return to competition after a month-long break when the Bobcats tee off at the Red Rocks Invitational in Cornville, Ariz. The tournament field will play 36 holes starting at 9:30 a.m. Saturday, March 23, and follow it with 18 holes on Sunday at the Agave Highlands golf course.
"We need to have a good tournament and get back to playing and scoring consistently," Montana State head coach Brittany Basye said. "We have three tournaments between now and conference and figuring out who will be in the top five is our main focus. We need to find out who's scoring and who will lead the team from now until the last putt drops to end the conference tournament."
The Bobcats' last appearance in a tournament will be exactly one month from the day when they open action on Saturday.
MSU competed in the GCU Invitational from Feb. 23-24 and took 19th out of 20 in the team standings. Kelly Hooper and Delaney Elliott led MSU in the individual standings with each firing three-round scores of 234 and 235, respectively. Coral Schulz, Lilly Navarre and Hailey Oster rounded out the scoring lineup.
The Bobcats will be represented in their five-golfer lineup with a couple of new faces this weekend. Senior Clare Dittemore will golf in the top spot followed by Sofia Rodriguez Todd, Schulz, Lucia Prieto Romano and Navarre. Hooper and Elliott will participate in the Red Rocks Invite as individuals.
"We're mixing up the lineup this tournament," Basye said. "I want to see how these five play in these roster spots. Kelly and Delaney have proven this season they can hold a roster spot, so now I'm looking to see who's playing well right now and who will be able to help us score well as a team."
The Agave Highlands golf course features a par 71 and 5,919-yard layout. The tournament field consists of 18 teams with Big Sky schools Idaho State, Montana, Southern Utah and Weber State all golfing in the meet.
"We have had a good couple days outside to practice and plan," Bayse said. "Now we need to go compete as a team and score well."
The Bobcats have three tournaments remaining on their schedule after it completes play at the Red Rocks Invite. Montana State closes out its season at the Big Sky Conference Championship which takes place in Boulder City, Nev., from April 19-21.
