MSU also visits Portland on Friday
BOZEMAN, Montana – The health may not be perfect, but it's improving. The lineup may not be completely healthy, but it's intact. That, for Montana State men's tennis coach Jared Burnham, is a step forward as his team faces its first conference match of the season in Portland this weekend.
The Bobcats face a non-league tune-up at the University of Portland on Friday at 10 am MT, before travelling across Rip City to face Portland State in a league match on Saturday at 2 pm MT. Burnham said the Cats face "a tough weekend," but are excited for the challenge.
"We may finally have our full lineup ready to go," he said. "We're still banged up, but it will be a good measuring stick to see where we're at with our best lineup."
Portland enters Friday's match 2-5 this spring, but the team's most recent win has Burnham's attention. "They beat Idaho last time out," he said of MSU's Big Sky rival, "and that's a quality win. They also beat Portland State 7-0, so this team is a very strong Big Sky-type team."
Montana State opens Big Sky play on Saturday against a Vikings squad playing well. The Vikings stand 5-3 on the young season, 1-1 in the Big Sky with a win in the bank against Idaho and a narrow loss to Sacramento State. PSU's No. 1 singles player, Matteo Fortini, a sophomore, is 6-2 this spring, 5-2 at the top spot. Senior Lucas Branco Casetlo stands 5-3 this spring, 4-3 at the second ladder spot.
After this week's matches the Bobcats head west to play Lewis-Clark State on Friday, March 1, before a league match against Idaho in Lewistown the next day.
