Kelly Hooper won her match decisively, but Montana State fell to Montana in the team competition Friday
MISSOULA, Mont. – Montana State senior Kelly Hooper earned a point for the Bobcat golf team at the Griz Match Play Challenge on Friday, Oct. 4, but Montana won the remaining four matchups in the team competition to advance to the winners head-to-head contest.
The Bobcats and Griz matched up eight golfers with the top five seeds factoring into the team competition. Hooper, MSU's top seeded golfer, had the most impressive showing of the day. She defeated Brooklyn Van Bebber 7&5 to put MSU out front early.
The No. 2 slot between MSU's Lucia Prieto Romano and Montana's Faith D'Ortenzio went into extra holes as the pair were all square after 18 holes. D'Ortenzio eventually carded a lower score on a 19th hole played to pick up a point for the Griz.
Montana beat Montana State, 4-1, to advance to the winners matchup. Kylie Esh finished 3&2 at the No. 3 position over Sofia Rodriguez Todd, Allison Sobol had the same result over MSU's Hailey Oster, while Montana's Jessica Ponce won 4&3 over Coral Schulz.
Three other matchups took place outside the team competition between MSU and Montana. Hannah Rosanova won her head-to-head against Margaret Harmon, 2&1. Annika Danenhauer and Tricia Joyce finished their 18 holes all square while Teigan Avery of Montana defeated MSU's Lilly Navarre 4&3.
"Kelly won her match easily and she's playing really well right now," Montana State head coach Brittany Basye said. "We had some tough matches that just went in favor of the Grizzlies. Match play demands gritting it out and all eight players have to be able to do that. We'll have to have everybody show up tomorrow."
The Bobcats will be pitted against Idaho State on Saturday, Oct. 5, at Missoula Country Club to close out the Griz Match Play Challenge.
