The Montana State track and field team makes its lone road trip of the 2018-19 indoor season when the Bobcats head to Gillette, Wyoming, to compete in the Powder River Dual. MSU will compete in a dual-scoring meet on Saturday starting at 11 a.m. against Wyoming's men's and women's team inside the Campbell County Parks and Recreation Center.
"It'll be nice to compete in a different environment," said Lyle Weese, Montana State's Director of Track and Field. "It's also nice to have them together on a bus, although the trip may be long, they tend to be times when teams come together. I think it'll be good to travel together and go compete in a different facility."
Montana State and Wyoming meet for the sixth consecutive year and for the fifth straight dual in Gillette. Last year's duals came down to the final event, the 4x400 relay, with Wyoming's men winning 74-69 and the Bobcat women topping the Cowgirls 75.50-68.50. The men's competition has come down to the final event the last three seasons, while last year's dual on the women's side was the closest result in the series.
Wyoming holds a 2-3 record in the Powder River Dual series in the men's and women's matchups.
"We're really excited about the meet and the team aspect of it," Weese said. "We're really focusing on the team scoring and trying to go over there and compete well enough to win two duals."
The USTFCCCA Regional Track and Field Rating Index was released for the first time this indoor season and both Bobcat teams were featured in the Mountain Region's top 15. The men's squad was listed in fourth with 177.19 points, second highest among fellow Big Sky members behind only Northern Arizona. MSU's women's team was ranked 12th in the region with 111.34 points.
Last weekend's first MSU Dual Meet Invitational in Worthington Arena produced several new all-time top 10 marks in program history for the Bobcats. Henry Adams, Samuel Bloom, Alex Lewis and Wyatt Thompson-Siporen have etched updated marks in the Bobcat record on the men's side this season. Freshmen Lucy Corbett and Delaney Smith have also made an impression on the women's indoor top-10 all-time list, while Truanne Roginske made three adjustments to the record book at MSU's previous meet.
Montana State currently has a combined 46 top-10 times and marks on the Big Sky performance list heading into the Powder River Dual. Eighteen of those 46 times and marks are in position for a podium finish at the Big Sky Conference Indoor Track and Field Championship meet.
"There was a lot of excitement after the meet just because of the amount of improvement that a number of individuals had," Weese said. "It was improvement that took them to a high level in the Big Sky Conference and a level that hopefully they can build upon."
The Bobcats are slated to host two more regular season track and field meets. MSU hosts the second dual invitational of the 2018-19 season on Feb. 8, then will partake in the Big Sky Tuner on Feb. 15. Montana State serves as site host of the 2019 Big Sky indoor meet from Feb. 21-23.
