Powder River Dual Ends in MSU-Wyoming Split

Both dual competitions come down to final relay race between Montana State and Wyoming track and field teams
GILLETTE, Wyo. – The 2019 edition of the Powder River Dual was the closest yet in the six-year run of the series between Montana State and Wyoming's track and field teams. This year's dual ended with each school earning a victory, with the Bobcat women topping the Cowgirls 75-73, but the Cowboys narrowly picking up a win over MSU by a 74-73 margin.
MSU's women's squad earned its second victory over Wyoming and tied the all-time series at 3-3. The MSU men's team is now 2-4 against Wyoming, with the last four duals between the two institutions being decided by five points or less.
Both dual competitions came down to the final event.
For MSU's women's team, a first-place finish in the 4x400 relay by Courtney Stromme, Elisabeth Krieger, Maddie Brockel and McKenna Ramsay held off Wyoming. Their converted time of 3:47.99, due to track and size and altitude, is the second-fastest time in the Big Sky this season. The men's 4x400 relay was a photo finish race. The MSU relay of Drake Schneider, Bill Yeager, Mitch Horning and Jadin Casey crossed the line in 3:23.18, less than two-tenths of a second behind Wyoming.
Several student-athletes completed first-place showings to score big points for the Bobcats in the Powder River Dual.
Ramsay, Layne Oliver, Gillian Maness, Delaney Smith, Lucy Corbett and Alex Hellenberg each won an individual event on the women's side for MSU.
Maness finished first in the 3,000-meter run with a converted time of 9:38.45, propelling her into the Bobcats' all-time top 10 list in the event at seventh overall. Kelsi Lasota followed her to finish second in the event with an adjusted mark of 9:42.32. Their times are the fastest in the conference this season.
Ramsay (2:13.95) completed the second fastest time in the Big Sky in the 400 en route to taking first and Oliver (4:55.06) put together the fourth best mark in the conference in the mile on Saturday to finish with the top time in the event.
Contributing solid points to MSU women's point total with runner-up finishes included Krieger, Truanne Roginske, Kendra Larson, Morgan Evans and Isabella Calabrese. Larson (2:13.95) completed the third fastest time in the Big Sky in the 800 to take runner-up, while Ramsay and Lasota added a pair of second-place finishes in their second individual appearances.
Also earning season bests on the women's side for the Bobcats were Haile Norred, Twila Reovan and Jordan Fink.
Horning, Casey, Henry Adams, Noah Martin and Alec Nehring each earned first-place showings for the Bobcat men.
Nehring moved from eighth to sixth all-time in MSU history, and up to second in the Big Sky this season, with his shot put of 58-00.25 (17.68m). Horning completed a season-best time and top mark in the Big Sky of 21.84 seconds to finish first in the 200. Casey took first in the 400, Adams had the top mark in the 60 hurdles, while Martin finished with the best performances in both the high jump and pole vault.
Alex Lewis had a pair of runner-up showings to add to MSU's point total. Also finishing second in an event included Horning, Schneider, Samuel Bloom and Ty Mogan.
Caleb Neth (long jump), Brock McCue (shot put), Josh Mertz (weight throw) and Chris Bianchini (800) all completed season-best efforts. Cameron Carroll and Bloom finished third and fourth in the mile, but their times were the third and fourth fastest in the Big Sky Conference this season.
The Montana State track and field teams will compete in Worthington Arena for their final two regular season meets ahead of the Big Sky Conference Championships. The Bobcats are set to host the second MSU Dual Meet Invitational next in Bozeman on Feb. 8.
