Laura Mary leads the Bobcat women's tennis team into a new campaign while also striving in MSU's exercise science program
Looking to transfer from Coastal Carolina, Laura Mary evaluated her options. She knew Montana State women's tennis head coach John Reeves, then experienced the Montana State campus for herself.
Bozeman was perfect for Mary. Montana State was a school that would allow her to study exercise science, Bozeman a community that puts an emphasis on outdoor sports and the team had an experienced coach. Mary described MSU as the best place for her.
Mary originally from Eaubonne, France, was born to athletic parents. Her father spent part of his youth on the France national ski team, while her mother was an avid dancer. Spending so much time around athletics left a major impact on Mary. The junior wants to stay involved with sports through her education.
Studying exercise science, Mary will have an opportunity to work with athletes for a career. She's already started working with some of her teammates and has a good friend who works in physical therapy in France. Mary's friend has been a source of guidance. She has an interest in continuing her education by pursuing graduate school for exercise physiology, a program MSU offers.
It helps she's on the President's List with a perfect 4.0 grade-point average.
"I've always been looking for a 4.0. Whenever I get a B, I think I should get an A," said Mary. "I'm just looking for A's."
Mary represents MSU student-athletes in the best possible way. The junior tennis player strives to be the best student in addition to the best tennis player she can be. Mary played number one and two singles last season for MSU, compiling a 10-11 overall mark.
Coming over to the United States poised a unique set of challenges for Mary. Not being a fluent English speaker made the first couple of months difficult, while making her academic successes even more impressive. It took a little bit for Mary to become acclimated to the new culture while being a student-athlete.
"The hardest part was the language," said Mary. "It took me a month and a half to really get used to it, then month by month it just got better."
Mary transferred to Montana State after her freshman season and arrived in Bozeman in the fall of 2018. Heading into her junior year, having a season in the MSU program will only help Mary. Going into her second year as a Bobcat, she'll have a chance to build off her strong start last spring.
The team as a whole has a busy next four months with Big Sky conference play starting on February 8against Eastern Washington. Mary feels the team is confident their offseason program will pay off.
"I'm really excited for the season," said Mary. "We've been working hard on the court and in the weight room during the fall. We're all pretty excited for the season to start."
Mary's one of the many student-athletes representing the university in the classroom as much as the court.
Montana State travels to the University of Colorado Friday, January 25, for its first dual of the spring schedule.
