After completing a sweep at the Al Manuel Northwest Invitational, the Montana State track and field teams travel to Salt Lake City and Ogden for the Utah/Weber State Spring Classic beginning on Friday, April 6. The first day of events will be held at Utah's McCarthey Family Track and Field Complex, while competition continues on Saturday morning when the meet moves to Weber State's Stewart Stadium.
"We're really looking to take a step forward from last week," Montana State head coach Dale Kennedy said. "We've got a group of 50 kids going and there's a scoring format which will be cumulative between the two days. We'll get to see some different competition. This is historically one of the meets the athletes look forward to and we have had good performances at it before."
Events begin on the Utah campus at 2:30 p.m. on Friday. The action starts with the javelin throw and running events commencing at 4:40 p.m. Saturday's portion of the meet opens at 10 a.m. on the Weber State campus with the women's hammer throw and men's discus. The 100-meter hurdles at 1 p.m. signify the start of running events that day.
Expected participating teams in the Utah/Weber State Spring Classic includes hosts Utah and Weber State, along with Idaho State and Utah State.
The Bobcats come off their first meet of the outdoor season in Missoula from March 30-31. MSU's men's and women's squads earned dual sweeps over Montana, Eastern Washington, Idaho and Portland State. The Bobcat men's and women's teams combined for 13 first-place finishes and also had several individual highlights.
Calvin Root received Men's Co-Big Sky Field Athlete of the Week honors with a first-place finish in the hammer throw and a runner-up showing in the discus. Kyle Douglass took first in two events and six others earned event victories on the men's side. McKenna Ramsay, Morgan Evans, Trisha Carlson and Megan Ralstin achieved top spots in events for the Bobcat women. Carlson, Kelsi Lasota and Anna French completed MSU all-time top 10 marks during a meet that featured below-freezing temperatures and blustery conditions throughout.
"We just kind of out-toughed everybody else over there," Kennedy said. "We battled the weather a little better than some of the other schools that were in it.
"It looked like Calvin Root had a great meet. He was a couple inches off his lifetime best and way ahead of where he was a year ago at this time. It looked like from an overall perspective that the throwers and the distance kids had the best day (at the Al Manuel Northwest Invitational). There were certainly some highlights in other areas, but collectively the distance runners were in force and so were the throwers."
The Bobcats are heading into their second weekend of competition during the outdoor schedule. MSU is scheduled to have athletes travel to both the Triton Invitational in California and the Montana Open in Missoula from April 13-14. A combination of Bobcats will participate in California at the Mt. SAC Relays and Beach Invitational from April 19-21, while MSU will close out the month with the Cat-Griz Dual at Montana's Dornblaser Field on April 28.
