Montana State Earns Cat-Griz Dual Sweep Over Montana

The Montana State Bobcats continued their recent dominance in the Cat-Griz Dual track and field series by topping the host Griz on Saturday
MISSOULA, Mont. –The Montana State track and field teams continued their recent dominance in the Cat-Griz Dual with the Bobcat men's and women's squads each earning victories over the host Grizzlies on Saturday, April 28, at Dornblaser Field. The Bobcat men won their fifth straight Dual against the Griz 126-71, while the MSU women picked up their fourth win in their last five dual meetings against Montana by a 104-85 margin.
Amanda Jaynes, Carley Vonheeder and Calvin Root each had standout performances for MSU.
Jaynes broke outdoor school records en route to individual victories in the 100-meter hurdles and the 400-meter hurdles. Both of the Bobcats' previous records had been established in 2003.
The senior became the record holder in the 100 hurdles with a converted time of 13.68 seconds as well as the 400 hurdles behind a converted mark of 57.93 seconds. Both times also broke the previous Cat-Griz Dual records. Jaynes moved up to 11th on the NCAA West Region qualifying list in the 400 hurdles.
Vonheeder broke out in the javelin by completing a mark of 156 feet, 3 inches, which was almost 6 feet farther than her previous lifetime best. The throw moved her up from seventh to third on the Bobcats' all-time top 10 list and also slid her up to 26th in the West Region.
Root continues to lead the Big Sky Conference with him topping his previous personal-best mark in the hammer throw he set a week ago. Root completed a throw of 206-07 (62.96m) and is 21st among West Region competitors.
The Montana State men's team combined for 16 first-place finishes on Saturday, including earning the best time in all the Cat-Griz Dual's track events.
Mitch Horning, Kyle Douglass, Alex Lewis and Ty Mogan each racked up a pair of first-place showings to lead the Bobcats in the individual standings. Jadin Casey, Samuel Bloom, Cameron Carroll, Mason Storm, Drake Schneider and Noah Martin also placed first in an event apiece.
Bill Yeager, Christopher Lange, Brandon Hough, Chris Bianchini, Anthony Schmalz, Aidan Pedersen, Alec Nehring and Trevor Simanski all finished in the top three of an event for the Bobcats. Schneider (110 hurdles) and Collin Buck (3,000 steeplechase) each recorded lifetime bests in their respective events.
The Bobcat women's side also had several individual first-place finishers. McKenna Ramsay (200), Trisha Carlson (1,500), Kelsi Lasota (5,000), Layne Oliver (3,000 steeplechase) all placed atop their respective events. Carter Theade, Isabella Calabrese and Alex Hellenberg all cleared the same mark of 11-07.75 (3.55m) in the pole vault to take the top three spots.
Taylor Buschy, Courtney Stromme, Elisabeth Krieger, Kendra Larson, Anna French, Morgan Evans, Hailey Phillips, Samantha Kelderman, Madison Liechty, Adeline Richardson, Megan Ralstin and Brookelyn Palin all earned top-three showings for MSU.
Claiming personal bests during the meet for the Bobcat women were Rachael McGree (100 hurdles), Ahna Kreitinger (400 hurdles) and Molly MacDonald (3,000 steeplechase).
The Bobcats wrap up their regular season on Saturday. May 5, when they head back to Missoula for the Tom Gage Classic. MSU travels to Moscow, Idaho, to compete in the Big Sky Outdoor Championships from May 8-11.
