"Enni stepped-up big," said MSU head coach Jon Reeves. "She was down 5-2 in the first set, fought off two set points, and took it in a tie-breaker. She went into a mode where she simply wasn't going to miss."
Montana State freshman Enni Zander showed uncanny resolve rallying from a 5-2 deficit in the opening set to record a 7-6 (6), 6-3 victory at No. 5 singles over Montana's Bianca Bostrom, giving the Bobcats a 4-3 win over its intra-state rival on Sunday afternoon.
"Enni stepped-up big," said MSU head coach Jon Reeves. "She was down 5-2 in the first set, fought off two set points, and took it in a tie-breaker. She went into a mode where she simply wasn't going to miss."
Montana State opened the match taking the doubles point with wins at Nos. 1 and 2. The Bobcats went up 2-0 as Angelina Philippova posted a straight-set win at No. 4 singles, before Montana tied the match with wins at the top two spots on the ladder.
"Against Montana, our team played aggressively in doubles and took control pretty quickly," Reeves stated. "Singles play started off great, but in true Cat-Griz fashion it quickly became a close match"
Linda Vink gave Montana State a 3-2 advantage with a 6-1, 4-6, 6-1 victory over Nathalie Joanlanne at No. 3 singles. Again, UM answered with a straight set win at No. 6 singles to set-up Zander's late match heroics.
"Our girls stepped-up and competed well across the board," Reeves stated. "Angelina (Philippova) played solid from start to finish. Linda (Vink) started off solid winning the first set, but then had to regain mental composure after the second set to take the match in the third set.
"This win is always significant for Montana State University," Reeves said. "I think the team learned a basic lesson in game planning by keeping things simple, being disciplined and refusing to give away points thru errors. All around, it was an exciting match for our team to experience."
On Saturday, the Bobcats dropped a 6-1 decision to Portland.
