OGDEN, Utah – The Montana State track and field teams put a stamp on their regular season schedules Friday, Feb. 16, inside Worthington Arena with several standout performances completed by Bobcat Athletes. Three Bobcats – Diego Leon, Amanda Jaynes and Calvin Root – were named by the Big Sky Conference as Athletes of the Week for their efforts on Tuesday, Feb. 20.
Leon and Jaynes were the Big Sky's selections for Track Athlete of the Week honors, while Root was chosen as the Men's Field Athlete of the Week.
Leon ran his second career sub-four mile on the Brick Breeden Fieldhouse track Friday. His time of 4:05.70 converted due to track size and altitude and put him at 3:57.37 for a lifetime best. Despite still sitting on the program's top 10 all-time list at third, his mark of 3:57.37 currently places him 12th in the nation and second in the Big Sky Conference.
The Hollister, Calif., native previously earned the award during the 2017 indoor following his first under four-minute mile.
Calvin Root completed four of his first five tosses in the men's weight throw by clearing 60 feet and saved his best for his last attempt. His final throw reached 63-06 (19.35m) and topped his previous lifetime best by over 10 inches. His new personal-best mark still stands fourth all-time in the MSU record book and paces the conference performance list.
Amanda Jaynes made program history a week prior and topped it this past Friday. Jaynes placed first in the women's 60-meter hurdles by crossing the line in 8.48. Her converted mark of 8.50 still shattered her mark of 8.61 she had established a tie for first in with Carley McCutchen in Bobcat laurels. She now holds the school record alone and leads the Big Sky Conference.
This is the first time Jaynes and Root have earned weekly accolades from the league.
The Bobcats begin competition at the 2018 Big Sky Conference Indoor Track and Field Championships on Thursday with multi-event athletes participating in the pentathlon and heptathlon. A majority of the athletes at the conference meet in Flagstaff will make their debut on Friday with all events available on the Pluto TV app and on WatchBigSky.com.
