MSU hosts fast-paced Portland State on Saturday afternoon
Montana State braces for one of the highest-scoring teams in college basketball Saturday when the Bobcats host Portland State at 2 pm in Worthington Arena.
The Vikings average 87.1 points a game under first-year head coach Barret Peery, fourth-most in the nation and the best mark in the Big Sky Conference, and they accomplish it with aggression on both ends of the floor. Offensively, Portland State utilizes a bombs away mentality, leading the league with 9.5 three-pointers a game and 228 three-point attempts. On the other end of the floor, PSU is second in the nation with 10.5 per game.
After looking to speed things up in the team's 92-76 win over Sacramento State on Thursday, the Cats hope to slow Portland State down. The Vikings forced 21 Bobcat turnovers last month in Portland, MSU's highest total this season, and managed seven offensive boards. PSU stands sixth in the nation with 14.3 offensive boards a game.
The Bobcats out-rebound opponents by 1.4 per game, and have finished all six Big Sky home games at least even in rebounding. MSU opponents average 76.4 points a game, but Portland State has been without leading scorer Deontae North for the past five games. In his absence Bryce Canda and fantastic freshman Holland Woods combine for over 30 points a game to pick up the slack.
After Saturday's game, which Jay Sanderson calls on the Bobcat Radio Network across the state and on msubobcats.com - the game is also televised on SWX Montana, and streamed on Pluto.TV on channel 238 - MSU heads west. The Cats play at Idaho on Thursday at 8 pm MT, before visiting Eastern Washington Saturday afternoon at 3 pm MT.
