Vikings use second-half rally, capitalize on poor MSU free throw shooting
BOZEMAN, Montana - Tyler Hall's three-pointer at the buzzer fell short, allowing Portland State to escape Worthington Arena with an 80-77 win on Saturday.
The Cats ended the first half on a high note, when a blocked shot by Zach Green led to a buzzer-beating half-court shot by Harald Frey to give MSU a 39-35 advantage. The Vikings shot 54.8% in the second half, though, and out-scored MSU 45-38.
Free throws proved problematic for the Bobcats all afternoon. "It's the first time I thought the free throw line has hurt us this year," MSU coach Brian Fish said of his team's 17-for-31 effort form the line. Harald Frey led the Cats with 22 points, while Keljin Blevins and Devonte Klines put up 11 points each. Brandon Hollins' double-double – 16 points, 14 rebounds – led the Vikings, while teammate Bryce Canda put up 18 points for PSU, including the game-winning three-pointer with 19 seconds to play.
The Bobcats fall to 13-13 on the season, 6-7 in Big Sky play, while Portland State is 15-10, 5-7. MSU heads west next week, visiting Idaho at 8 pm MT on Thursday.
