“I thought we battled pretty well,” said MSU head coach Jared Burnham. “We got out to a slow start, but we got our heads straight when we needed too. I thought our No. 3 team really took care of business.”
Montana State opened its quarterfinal match against Sacramento State the way they'd hope, but in the end it was the Hornets that rallied for a 4-1 victory over the Bobcats, Thursday afternoon in the opening round of the Big Sky Conference Tournament at the Phoenix Tennis Center.
The Bobcats took the opening doubles point with wins at Nos. 2 and 3. Sacramento State (13-11) captured No. 1 doubles, before MSU responded at No. 2 with a 6-3 victory behind the stellar play of Kellen Bates and Adrian Torrico. Montana State (7-15) won the first point as the No. 3 tandem of Kasper Parlklo and Dylan Harvala dispatched Christopher Clayton and Dom Miller 6-1.
"I thought we battled pretty well," said MSU head coach Jared Burnham. "We got out to a slow start, but we got our heads straight when we needed too. I thought our No. 3 team really took care of business."
Sacramento State quickly grabbed the momentum to open singles, winning at Nos. 1 and 6, respectively, both in straight sets and identical 6-2, 6-2 margins. The Hornets gained a 3-1 advantage as Kasparas Zemaitelis came from behind to notch a 2-6, 6-1, 6-3 decision over Alexander Flink.
"Sacramento is a good team and played very well," Burnham said. "We got off to a bad start in singles, but I'm happy we had some guys who turned-around their play and fought through the heat. We competed hard."
Afternoon temperatures hovered in the low '90s for most of the match. "It took a little adjustment. I think we've seen just a handful of 50-degree days this season," Burnham commented.
The match was clinched at No. 5 singles as Clayton won a three-set battle 6-3, 2-6, 6-1 over Parlklo. Matches at Nos. 2 and 4 went unfinished.
"We'll take a few weeks off and then the guys will get after it over the summer," Burnham said. "This team has a solid foundation. The past few weeks we've been playing very well and we'll look to carry over that momentum."
