Playing outdoors for the first time in over a month the Montana State women's tennis team got comfortable with its surroundings early scoring the first four points of the match to post a 4-3 victory over Eastern Washington, Friday afternoon.
Montana State (13-4, 9-1 BSC) opened the match taking the doubles point with wins at Nos. 1 and 3. The Bobcats quickly took command of the match with victories at Nos. 1, 2 and 6 singles, all in straight sets to clinch the contest.
Freshman Chloe Goyette and senior Wanda Holopainen sparked the early MSU run as Goyette posted a 6-2, 6-1 win at No. 1, while Holopainen recorded a 6-1, 6-2 decision at No. 6.
"The match was interesting for us as a team," said MSU head coach Jon Reeves. "We got off to a quick start and took the doubles point. Wanda and Chloe really buckled down and took control and finished their singles matches to put us up 3-0. Laura (Middel) had some tough moments to fight through, but clinched the match at 4-0. Eastern Washington fought hard for the three remaining matches. They showed a lot of heart and didn't give us anything."
Eastern Washington (5-14, 3-7) took Nos. 3, 4 and 5 singles to close the final score to one point.
"The thing I am happiest about is we had a few players who had big breakthroughs in their understanding of their games," Reeves said. "To further progress as a team we have to continue to take ownership of our practice and match playing habits."
The Bobcats finish its regular season at Idaho on Sunday with the winner finishing second in the Big Sky Conference and earning the No. 2 seed at next week's league tournament in Phoenix, Ariz.
"It was nice to get some match play under our belt outside since we only have ten days before the conference tournament starts in Phoenix," Middel said. "Sunday will be an interesting battle. We have nothing to lose."
