Bobcat Men Sweep, Women Place Second at Al Manual Northwest Dual

The Montana State men’s team swept its three opponents while the women’s squad topped two of three at the Al Manual Northwest Dual Saturday
MISSOULA, Mont. – The Montana State men's track and field team swept its three opponents while the women's squad topped two of three at the Al Manual Northwest Dual Saturday, April 1, at Dornblaser Field.
The Bobcats toppled three adversaries on the men's side. MSU defeated host Montana 117-79 and easily beat Idaho, 137-51, and Eastern Washington, 145-52. The women's team had a good showing as it beat Eastern Washington (125-75) and Idaho (139-59). Montana earned the sweep on the women's side by outscoring Montana State 124.50-77.50.
MSU had nine first-place finishes in the men's quad dual to earn the sweep.
Juniors Diego Leon and Kyle Douglass each earned victories in multiple events. Leon took first in the 1,500-meter run (3:58.84) and the 5,000 (15:08.70). Douglass finished atop the shot put with a mark of 56-02.00 (17.12m) and the discus with a throw of 169-01 (51.54m).
Samuel Bloom, Calvin Root, Graham Reid, Caleb Neth and Noah Martin completed MSU's first-place showings.
Bloom took first in the 800 (1:52.67), Root threw the farthest mark in the hammer throw (187-09), Reid had the top mark in the pole vault (15-01), Neth finished atop the long jump standings by jumping 22-00.75 and Martin reached a height of 6-10.75 (2.10m) in the high jump.
The Bobcats had several solid appearances from different members of the team that picked up points in the dual-format meet.
Mitch Horning took third in both the 100 (11.06) and 200 (22.77) to pace the 'Cats in the sprint events. MSU had runner-up showings in both the 400 and 800 behind runs by Jadin Casey (48.55) and Cameron Carroll (1:53.06), respectively.
Mason Storm finished runner-up in the 110 hurdles with a time of 15.07 seconds, while Christopher Lange took fourth in the 400 hurdles by crossing the line in 54.76 for fourth.
In the three distance races, Ty Mogan took runner-up in the 5,000 with a time of 15:09.63, Anthony Schmalz (4:01.22) placed fourth in 1,500 and Zach Kughn led MSU in the 3,000 steeplechase by finishing in second with a time of 9:28.74.
Freshman Alec Nehring competed in three throwing events and finished in the top four in each. His best showing was a third-place finish in the discus (155-09).
Also earning top-three showings during the dual was Austin Decker in the pole vault, Aiden Pedersen in the high jump, Alex Lewis and Trevor Simanski in the triple jump and Martin in the long jump.
Both of MSU's relays on the men's side finished in second place.
Freshman McKenna Ramsay was one of MSU's top performers on the women's side. She took first in the 200 (25.01) and the 400 (56.48), and also served as the anchor leg on both of the Bobcats' second-place finishing relay teams.
Amanda Jaynes and Christie Schiel earned first-place finishes and had a runner-up showing each. Jaynes took first in the 400 hurdles with a time of 1:00.85 and took second in the 100 hurdles (14.61). Schiel crossed the line first in the 1500 with a mark of 4:34.05 and wrapped up second in the 800 (2:14.00).
Alyssa Snyder also earned a victory in the track events, completing a time of 17:07.61 for first in the 5,000.
The Bobcats had three field events that they earned top three finishes.
Casey Teska finished second in the pole vault by clearing 12-00.00 (3.66m) and Carley VonHeeder led the MSU contingent in the with a throw 136.00 (41.45m) for runner-up. Jacqueline Verlanic placed second in the hammer throw with a toss of 182-08 (55.67m) and Callen Crawford took third with a mark of 163-08 (49.90m).
Truanne Roginske, Jessica Chrisp, Hailey Phillips and Madison Liechty also finished in the top four of their respective events during the meet.
Montana State returns to action next weekend with two different meets. The Bobcats head to Salt Lake City for the Utah Spring Classic on Friday, April 7, then wrap up competition Saturday at the Weber State Wildcat Invitational.
