MSU Track and Field Battles Conditions to Open Utah/Weber State Spring Classic

The Bobcats competed through blustery conditions to earn several standout performances during the first day of the Utah/Weber State Spring Classic Friday
SALT LAKE CITY, Utah – The Bobcat track and field team competed through blustery conditions to earn several standout performances during the first day of the Utah/Weber State Spring Classic Friday, April 7, at the University of Utah's McCarthey Family Track.
Seniors Christie Schiel and Casey Teska both finished first in their respective events on the women's side.
Schiel finished first in the 800-meter run – in a field that featured 35 runners – with a time of 2:12.09. Teska placed atop the pole vault standings with her best clearance of the 2017 outdoor campaign with a mark of 12-05.25 (3.82m).
Both the MSU men's and women's teams had notable athletes complete top-three showings.
Junior Kyle Douglass moved up a spot on the men's program's outdoor shot put top-10 list to eighth with his throw that traveled 57-05.75 (17.55m) and earned runner-up in the event Friday. Following him in the event was freshman Alec Nehring, who took third with his outdoor best shot put of 53-05.50 (16.32m).
Sophomore Samuel Bloom led the Bobcat men in the 800 by taking third, crossing the line in 1:54.45 and was closely followed in fourth by Cameron Carroll (1:54.73).
Freshmen McKenna Ramsay and Carley VonHeeder earned personal bests in runner-up performances. Ramsay took second in the 400 with a time of 55.82, while VonHeeder accrued the top mark of her career in the javelin with a throw of 143-05.50 (43.74m).
MSU's Lindsay Benson added a runner-up tally on the women's side with her showing in the shot put, senior Leslie Gappa took third in the javelin with her personal-best throw of 142-07.25 (12.60m), Isabella Calabrese finished third in the pole vault and Madison Liechty led the 'Cats in the 3,000 steeplechase with her time of 11:39.15.
Numerous Bobcats achieved lifetime bests during the first portion of the Spring Classic meet.
Truanne Roginske (100), Courtney Stromme (100), Hailey Phillips (100 hurdles) and Megan Ralstin (long jump) all had the top marks of their careers in their respective events on the women's side.
On the men's side, Andrew Vandine (800), Anthony Schmalz (800) and Christopher Lange (110 hurdles) all completed top marks of their collegiate careers in their respective events.
Montana State continues competition at the Utah/Weber State Spring Classic in Ogden, Utah, on the campus of Weber State Saturday beginning at 10 a.m.
