Bobcats prepared to make third team appearance this season when they take on 10 other schools at Desert Intercollegiate
Montana State University women's golf begins play at the Wyoming Cowgirl Desert Intercollegiate at 8:30 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 1. The Bobcats will be pitted against 10 other teams at the Classic Club, a par-72 6,112 yard course, in Palm Desert, California.
The tournament field includes Big Sky members Cal Poly, Montana, Northern Arizona and Southern Utah, along with Cal State Bakersfield, Cal State Northridge, UC Riverside, Hawaii, Santa Clara and host Wyoming.
Junior Jaylee Tait, sophomore Clare Dittemore and freshmen Delaney Elliott, Kelly Hooper and Coral Schulz make up MSU's lineup for the Intercollegiate. Tait is the lone Bobcat with previous experience at the Classic Club. That inexperience makes the preparation ahead of teeing off even more important according to head coach Brittany Basye.
"I think the biggest thing is when we play our practice round, we've got to take really good notes," Basye said. "We make a game plan and we stick to it. We go out and do what we do best and try not to do new things out there. Just keep working on what we've been doing and go into (the tournament) with a positive attitude."
Hooper, a Spokane, Washington native, has been the Bobcats' top finisher in their last two tournaments. She tied for 18th in the Hobble Creek Classic to begin the fall then tied for 10th in the Cougar Cup Sept. 20. Tait and Schulz have appeared in both MSU events this fall, Dittemore makes her second appearance this season, while Elliott plays in her first collegiate event for the Bobcats this weekend.
Basye said she looks for her team to be confident going out on the course Saturday and to continue working on the certain traits they've focused on so far this season.
"I think the biggest thing is consistency and commitment," Basye said. "We've been talking about being committed over your shot this whole season and I think we've got to continue saying that. Being committed is so important. Being consistent as well because this is the type of golf course that can easily sneak up on you. It plays long, it could be windy and it's dry, so being committed to each shot is going to be hands down most important."
The Bobcats are set to play 36 holes Saturday and 18 more on Sunday. Live scoring is available at GolfStat.com.
