It will be an all Montana State singles final at the Utah State Aggie Invite on Sunday as senior Laura Middel and freshman Chloe Goyette each captured their semifinal matches on Saturday in Logan, Utah.
Middel advanced with an opening-round victory over Mikala Lowrance of Southern Utah 6-1, 6-2, before winning her quarterfinal match with a 3-6, 6-1, 6-3 decision over Utah State's Sabrina Demerath. The native of Hoogezand, Netherlands dispatched Kristen Kirby of Colorado Mesa 3-6, 6-2, 6-0 to move into the finals.
Goyette's path to the finals started with a 6-0, 6-3 win over CMU's Emily Beckley. The product of Yakima, Washington defeated Utah State's Hannah Jones 4-6, 6-2, 6-1 in the quarterfinals, before knocking off Utah State's Monika Van de Vondel 7-6(8), 3-0 retired in the semis. Goyette rallied from a 5-1 deficit in the opening set to force a tiebreak. In the tiebreaker, Goyette fended off seven set points to win 10-8.
"I am incredibly proud of Laura Middel and Chloe Goyette," said MSU head coach Jon Reeves. "They both found themselves in difficult positions in their quarterfinal and semifinal matches. They dug in, committed to the adjustments, and turned things around. It is always enjoyable to see a student-athlete believe in the process of competition and create opportunities to give themselves a chance."
In doubles play, Middel combined with Naomi Holopainen advanced to the finals with wins over Southern Utah and Utah State. The duo will face Van de Vondel and Lucy Octave in the championship match.
"(Laura) Middel and Naomi Holopainen are getting back to their doubles form from last year," Reeves said. "They are beginning to play with enthusiasm and finishing off point quickly. When they play smart and aggressive they are a tough out."
Goyette and doubles partner Laura Mary will play in the doubles consolation finals, as well.
