Bobcat Golfers Head to Washington State's Cougar Cup

Familiarity with course could provide boost for Bobcats
Montana State's golf team returns to the site of one of its outstanding performances of last fall, competing in the Cougar Cup at Washington State on Monday and Tuesday.
Three of last year's team members – senior Janelle Reali, junior Jaylee Tait and sophomore Clare Dittemore – return to the Palouse this season. "Last year we finished fourth at this tournament and I am hoping we can improve on that," said Bobcat coach Brittany Basye. "Janelle (299), Jaylee (298) and Clare (300) played in the lineup last year, and competed very well. Kelly Hooper has played this course and it should suit her game well, and I think the course will set up well for Coral (Schulz)."
Schulz and Hooper are freshmen who have cracked the MSU lineup, but Basye has lauded them for their mental game. She says that is important this weekend. "Palouse is a hitter's course and if you are making putts you can put up low scores. But you have to play smart. It's wide open, so playing the right shot off the tee is important."
Basye said the course layout, specifically its large greens, has influenced the teams preparation in the last week. "Hitting the correct section of the green is important," she said. "Wind can change our game plans, as well, and more thought needs to go into each shot if that's the case."
In total, Basye said she and the players are ready to begin the second weekend of competitive golf. "I'm excited to see what kind of score the team can put up. We did a lot of putting practice this week to prepare for these greens and I'm anxious to see it pay off."
MSU plays 36 holes on Monday and 18 more on Tuesday. Results are available at golfstat.com.
