The Montana State women's tennis team will face Weber State in the opening-round of the Big Sky Conference Tournament, Friday, April 29 at 11 a.m. (MST) in Sacramento, California.
Montana State enters as the No. 5 seed in the six-team tournament, while Weber State is the No. 4 seed. The other first-round match pits No. 3 Idaho against No. 4 Eastern Washington. The winners advance to the semifinals on Saturday against No. 1 Northern Arizona or No. 2 Sacramento State. The championship contest will be held on Sunday. Matches will be played at the Gold River Racquet Club.
The Bobcats finished the regular-season 8-14 overall and 6-5 in Big Sky action. MSU closed out its season on April 15 with a dominating 7-0 win over No. 4 seed Eastern Washington. Weber State defeated the Bobcats 4-3 in Ogden on March 25. The Bobcats won the doubles points, and claimed victories via Laura Middel at the No. 2 spot and Angelina Philippova at No. 4 singles.
MSU has been paced this season by its top doubles duo of Middel and Naomi Holopainen. The duo went undefeated in Big Sky play at 11-0 and were 17-4 overall. In singles action, Middel and Philippova led MSU with identical 9-2 league ledgers.
Since the league went to the seeded format in 1993, the Bobcats have appeared 19 of 21 Big Sky Conference tournaments, including the championship matches in 1997 and 1998. MSU has never won a Big Sky tournament title.
The tournament will be the first for new head coach Jon Reeves.
