Root makes Podium, Schmitz Wins 800 Prelims in Day Two of Championships

Calvin Root highlighted the second day of the Big Sky Conference Indoor Track and Field Championships for Montana State, placing third in the weight throw, marking a distance of 60-06.50. Teammate Zach Sharp wasn't far behind, tallying five team points and fourth place finish with a throw of 59-07.75. Root walked away from the day with All-Big Sky Conference credentials.
Junior hepathlete Mason Storm finished fifth in the heptathlon, totaling a score of 4,757. Storm clocked a time of 8.52 in the 60 hurdles and cleared the bar at 11-09.75 in the pole vault.
Alex Lewis just missed the podium, placing fourth in the long jump with a mark of 23-06.25. Storm placed tenth with a jump of 21-08.25. Austin Decker finished seventh, clearing a pole vault height of 15-01.00.
Placing sixth in the 200 and eighth in the 60, Mitch Horning will advance to the finals in both events tomorrow afternoon. Horning ran a 22.08, 200m dash, and clocked a time of 6.92 in the 60.
Samuel Bloom advanced to the 800 finals, crossing the finish line in 1:56.17 and Jadin Casey will compete in the 400 finals tomorrow after a fourth place finish in the prelims (49.30).
Montana State distance medley relay (Martin Ponce, Christopher Lange, Shawn Peden, Zach Kughn) placed fourth with a time of their fastest time of the season, 10:22.40.
Kaylee Schmitz continues to lead the conference in the 800, winning the prelims and earning a time of 2:13.96. Just out of a qualifying spot was Christie Schiel's ninth place finish and 2:15.52 time.
The second place finisher in the pentathlon, Danielle Rider, just missed the qualifying mark in the 60 hurdles with a time of 8.86 (ninth place). Jessica Chrisp placed 11th, clocking a time of 8.92. Chrisp earned two team points in the high jump, clearing the bar at 5-02.25 and placing sixth.
The men's shot put and women's triple jump begin the field events tomorrow at 10 a.m. and the women's mile will begin at 12:20 p.m. to kick off the final day of track events.
