The Montana State women’s basketball team struggled to find its shooting prowess hitting just 31 percent from the field and 13 percent from beyond the three-point arc in a 70-62 loss at UC Davis, Wednesday night.
The Montana State women's basketball team struggled to find its shooting prowess hitting just 31 percent from the field and 13 percent from beyond the three-point arc in a 70-62 loss at UC Davis, Wednesday night.
"We were a little impatient with our offense in the first half," said MSU head coach Tricia Binford. "We're still trying to find our identity and put the pieces together. We have a very talented team that can shoot the ball very well, it's just a matter coming together."
Montana State (1-3) jumped out early taking a 10-5 lead on a Peyton Ferris free throw at the 6:44 mark, before UC Davis (4-0) closed out the quarter on a 9-2 run. The Aggies built its advantage to 13-points with a minute left in the second stanza and took a 37-26 lead into intermission.
MSU opened the third quarter shooting 57 percent from the field and whittled the lead down to 54-47 following a Hannah Caudill layup. UCD responded and took its largest lead of the contest at 61-47 with six-minutes remaining. An 11-2 Bobcat run closed Montana State to within 63-58 on a Ferris three-pointer with 1:16 left, but MSU would get no closer.
"We saw some really good things," Binford said. "We rebounded well and we took care of the ball. Davis is really efficient team. We just need to stay confident and knock down some shots."
Ferris finished the game with 21 points, connecting on seven-of-13 from the field. Senior Riley Nordgaard, playing in her first game of the season, posted a double-double with 11 points and a game-high 12 rebounds. Freshman Blaire Braxton added seven points and five boards, while Caudill ended with six assists.
MSU out-rebounded UCD 43-38, and committed just eight turnovers.
The Aggies were led by Rachel Nagel with 21 points and 11 rebounds.
MSU will play Pacific on Friday at 7:30 p.m. (MST) at the Tiger Turkey Tip-off on Stockton, Calif.
