Montana State head coach Tricia Binford is thankful for many things. On Friday night, she was appreciative of senior Riley Nordgaard finding fellow senior Margreet Barhoum alone at the top of the arc. The product of Edmonds, Washington calmly drained a three-pointer with 41-seconds remaining to lift the Bobcats to a 72-66 win over Pacific in the opening-round of the Tiger Turkey Tip-off Classic in Spanos Center.
Barhoum's triple gave Montana State (2-3) the cushion it was looking for in a game that featured 12 lead changes and 15 ties. Juniors Hannah Caudill and Delany Junkermier combined on five-of-six free throws in the final twenty-seconds to secure MSU's first road win of the season.
"We're really proud of the way our kids executed," Binford said. "We really simplified our playlist and cut some things out so they could just go out and play the game."
For the second straight contest the Bobcats got out early taking an 8-1 advantage on an Annika Lai layup. Pacific (2-3) answered and held a 22-20 margin at the end of the opening stanza.
The Tigers grabbed a four-point lead in the second quarter before MSU evened the contest at 34-all at halftime. Coming out of intermission, the score was tied on three occasions and a free throw by Pacific's Najah Queenland at the end of the third quarter gave the Tigers a 53-50 advantage.
The final stanza was highlighted by five ties before Barhoum's three-pointer gave MSU the advantage to put the game away.
"I loved the fight by Margreet when she came in," Binford said. "She was super consistent for us. I thought she was a huge spark. We talked about getting contributions from the bench across the board and Margreet really stepped-up and hit a big time three."
Caudill paced the Bobcats with a team-high 16 points, while dishing out five assists and connecting on three three-pointers. Nordgaard finished with her second straight double-double with 10 points and ten rebounds. Senior Peyton Ferris, who fouled out midway through the final quarter, ended with 12 points and eight rebounds.
Montana State also received solid contributions from Lai with eight points and six boards, Blaire Braxton seven points and nine rebounds, and Barhoum with eight points, including a pair of triples.
"I thought Hannah was a tremendous leader throughout the course of the game," Binford added. "We found ourselves in some difficult situations with foul trouble and I thought a lot of people stepped-up. It was a day where we finally started hitting some shots and that makes things a lot easier."
For the game, the Bobcats shot 44 percent from the field and 70 percent from the free throw line. MSU also won the battle of the boards, out-rebounding the Tigers 44-35.
UoP had three players in double-figure scoring led by Chelsea Lidy with 16 points.
MSU will play Santa Clara at 2 p.m. (MST) on Saturday.
