MSU Throwers Impress in Powder River Duals

Montana State track and field went head-to-head with Wyoming, the fourth ranked team in the Mountain Region Saturday afternoon in Gillette, Wyoming. This is the third consecutive year these two teams have competed against each other in the Powder River duals and every year the match-up gets closer and closer. The Bobcat men were edged out in the 4x400 relay by .37 seconds to fall by two points.
"The men stepped up today and really competed," head coach Dale Kennedy said. "I'm happy with how the women competed as well. There were so many lifetime and season bests and huge improvements from last week."
Despite getting edged out by Wyoming's Tyler Anderson, Zach Sharp threw a career-best 59-10.00 in the weight throw, which will move him up to number two in the Big Sky. Calvin Root also PR'd, placing third with a mark of 59-09.75. Kyle Douglass was victorious in the shot put, throwing a lifetime best of 57-09.5. This mark puts Douglass on MSU's Top 10 list at number five.
Mason Storm marked a personal best of 22-10.75 in the long jump, placing second and qualifying for the conference championships. Tristen Gray cleared a bar of 6-04.75 in the high jump to win the event and mark a new best.
Diego Leon and Matthew Gotta placed first and third in the 3000, both running their fastest times of 8:35.40 and 8:37.61.
In the mile, Kaylee Schmitz ran a 5:04.85, winning the event with her career best. Alyssa Snyder placed third (5:08.42) and Layne Oliver finished with a personal-best in fourth (5:12.58).
Pentathletes Danielle Rider and Jessica Chrisp both marked lifetime highs in two separate events. Rider ran the 60m hurdles in 8.97 and Chrisp jumped a distance of 18-00.5 in the long jump. Casey Teska won the pole vault for the third consecutive week, clearing a height of 12-05.5. Carter Theade finished just behind her with a career-high of 11-11.75. Jaqueline Verlanic found her best career finish, placing second in the weight throw with a mark of 53-07.
Montana State returns home for the remainder of the season on February 5th to host Montana, Sacramento State and Eastern Washington.
