COMPLETE RESULTS | TEAM SCORES
The Montana State women's track and field team swept the field of Idaho State, Montana and Mountain West Conference member Utah State in a Friday evening meet. The Grizzlies battled the closest with the 'Cats edging them out by only two points (75.00-73.00). The men topped Montana 79.00-61.00 and battled a close fight with Idaho State, dropping to the Bengals 78.00-72.00.
"Tonight was a significant improvement from last week," head coach Dale Kennedy said. "We've made some progress, but we're still a little rough around the edges. We need to make some improvements each week to be ready to the conference championships. We were competitive as a team and as individuals, which is going to put us in a good spot come championship time."
Kaylee Schmitz ran the 800 in 2:15.04 to qualify for the conference championships in addition to running the anchor leg of the 4x400 meter relay that took first place. Schmitz won the 800 by 3 seconds over teammate Taylor Buschy. Buschy ran the fastest leg of the relay, solidifying the victory in 3:57.83.
The freshman cross country standout Alyssa Snyder dominated the 3000, qualifying for the conference championships in 10:11.04 with her closest competitor 21 seconds behind her. Chiara Warner placed second in the mile, hitting a BSC mark of 5:09.45.
Senior pole vaulter Casey Teska cleared a height of 12-05.50, winning the event for the second week in a row. Danielle Rider added points for the team, placing sixth in the shot put with a mark of 41-10.50. Utah State took four of the top five spots with Maci Bingham leading the way (47-10.50). Jacqueline Verlanic found her way into the top three of the weight throw, throwing a distance of 52-04.50.
Placing in the top three of two events, Mitchell Horning continues to lead the Bobcat sprinters in the 60 and 200. Horning placed second in the 200 with a time of 22.39 and third in the 60 (6.99).
Zach Sharp threw 57-09.75 feet to win the weight throw and qualify for the BSC championships. Alexander Lewis topped his long jump mark from last week, hitting a distance of 23-00.00 and placing third.
The Bobcats will compete on the road at Wyoming on Saturday, January 30, before returning home to host four straight meets including the Big Sky Conference Championships on February 25-27.
