Five Bobcats Qualify for Conference Championships in Season Opener

Montana State opened the indoor season Friday evening in Bozeman, hosting Montana, Montana State - Billings, Rocky and Carroll in the MSU Open. Five Bobcats hit Big Sky Conference qualifying marks in six different events.
"This was a great start to the season," head coach Dale Kennedy said. "Overall the team competed really well. We're a little rusty, but this team is working hard to improve each week. We need to step it up to a higher level next week, competing against more Big Sky schools. There were some great indicidual performances tonight, which is nice to see this early in the season."
Sophomore Kyle Douglass led all competitors in the shot put, throwing a personal-best 55-04.25, almost three feet past the BSC qualifying mark. Alexandra Rowland led MSU's women, hitting a mark of 41-07.00. Zach Sharp and Calvin Root went one-two in the weight throw with throws of 55-11.00 and 53-09.75.
Alexander Lewis and Kevin Close won the horizontal jumps and the pair qualified for the conference meet. Lewis' long jump was 22-09.00 and Close converted a jump of 46-01.25. Danielle Rider placed third in the long jump (18-00.25), while Leah Cook also found a third place finish in the triple (36-07.75).
In the pole vault, Austin Decker walked away with the individual victory, vaulting 15-03.00 and Luke Middelstadt tied for second, clearing a height of 14-09.00. For the women, Casey Teska had a great start to the season, qualifying for the championships after surpassing 12-09.50 in the event.
The men's 4x400 relay was won by the 'Cats after Jadin Casey held off UM's anchor leg to win the race in 3:22.70.
Matthew Gotta and Diego Leon paced their way to a third and fourth place finish in the 5000, marking unconverted times of 15:28.62 and 15:40.49. After conversions, these times will likely be BSC qualifiers. Jenette Northey ran at the same pace of MSU-Billings runner Della Lyle, until the final lap when she cruised her way to the finish line. Northey clocked a 18:33.49 time.
Mitchell Horning hit two qualifiers, running the 200 in 22.26 and the 60m hurdles in 6.95. The 'Cats took spots one, two and three in the women's 60 with Daryan Box leading the way with a time of 7.98. Danielle Rider was just .01 seconds behind (7.99) and Truanne Roginske .03 seconds off Box's pace (8.01).
Montana State remains at home next Friday, January 22 to host Montana, Idaho State, and Utah State. Field events are set to begin at 4 p.m. and track events a 5 p.m.
