“Doubles will play an important part in the weekend,” Albrecht said. “If we can get that opening point, it will take some pressure off of us as we head into singles.”
Bobcat Women's Tennis Team Closes out Regular Season at Home
April 16, 2015 – BOZEMAN, Montana – The Montana State women's tennis team knows the scenario if they want to make the Big Sky Conference Tournament next weekend in Sacramento, California. The Bobcats must defeat Idaho State, Northern Arizona and Weber State this weekend and have Idaho down Portland State on Saturday.
"We'll use the old adage 'one match at a time,' MSU Head Coach Denise Albrecht said. "The only thing we can control and focus on is the match we are playing first against Idaho State. Then we'll move on to Northern Arizona and Weber State."
MSU opens its three-match home stand hosting Idaho State on Friday at 11 a.m., followed by Northern Arizona, Saturday at 10:30 a.m., and Weber State, Sunday, 10 a.m. All matches will be played at the Bobcat-Anderson Tennis Center.
Montana State is currently 10-11 overall and 3-5 in Big Sky Conference action. The Bobcats have been paced this season by sophomore Laura Middel. Playing at No. 1 singles, Middel has recorded an 8-10 overall mark and has combined with Jessica Brycki at No. 1 doubles where the tandem has posted a 5-7 overall ledger.
After sitting out the first ten matches of the season, MSU has received a boost from sophomore sisters Wanda and Naomi Holopainen. Naomi Holopainen has registered MSU's best record of the season at 7-4. The transfer from Metro State had also recorded a 5-3 mark in Big Sky action at No. 4 singles.
Montana State's No. 3 doubles tandem of Molly Crum and Angelina Philippova is the only combination with a winning record at 3-2 in league play.
"Doubles will play an important part in the weekend," Albrecht said. "If we can get that opening point, it will take some pressure off of us as we head into singles."
Northern Arizona (11-9, 7-2) and Weber State (11-4, 6-2) have already clinched spots in the Big Sky tournament. Idaho State is 2-12 and 2-6 on the season.
