MSU falls late in Moscow
The script was familiar. Agonizingly so.
Montana State entered the final 90 seconds of its game against Idaho within three points on Saturday, but a dagger three-pointer by Mike Scott on his senior day and a costly turnover sealed the Bobcats' fate in an 80-73 Vandals win.
Scott finished with 14 points, but the individual dual of the day came between former Post Falls, Idaho, teammates Marcus Colbert and Connor Hill. Colbert led all scorers with 26 points in a losing effort for MSU, while Hill poured in 21 to lead the Vandals.
"Marcus fought hard, and I thought Zach Green did a good job making Hill take tough shots," said MSU coach Brian Fish. "He's a good player and he got his points, but I thought we did a good job fighting today."
Offensive execution at crucial moments cost the Cats. After enduring a five minute dry spell in the first half, MSU went five-and-a-half minutes with only one free throw in the middle of the second. MSU responded, though. A three-pointer by Colbert – one of his five – and one by Holm kept the team in the game, and an and-one by Dison with 2:40 left pulled MSU within five, 73-68.
"We were right there again," Fish said.
MSU defended well for most of the day, and the Bobcats held Idaho scoreless for nearly four minutes until Scott's three-pointer with 40 seconds to play. Idaho shot 45.6%, while MSU hit 40.4%. Each team hit nine three-pointers, and Idaho made one free throw more than the Bobcats. MSU outrebounded Idaho 36-31.
The game's first half featured a quick tempo and good offensive flow for both teams, and ended no closer to conclusion than when it started. Each team benefitted from hot streaks and endured cold stretches in getting to the locker rooms knotted at 39. MSU's aggressive play showed on the offensive end in the team's 14 free throw attempts, 13 of which were good. Idaho shot 42% in the first half, MSU 39%, and each team turned the ball over only five times.
In addition to Colbert's 26 points, on the heels of 27 Thursday, Dison scored 16 and Danny Robison 10. Colbert also snagged eight rebounds.
