MSU endures home loss to Montana
Chris Kemp scored a career-high 17 points off the bench to lead Montana to a 70-54 win over Montana State in Bozeman on Saturday.
The win marked UM's 10th consecutive over MSU, and was the Bobcats' 23rd loss of the season, the most in school history. It unfolded in familiar fashion, with the Cats leading for much of the first half before Montana took control. UM outscored the Cats 63-38 over the game's final 32 minutes.
"Credit them," said Bobcat coach Brian Fish. "They're a very good basketball team. They weathered a storm they probably knew was coming. Our guys got out and got the ball moving and scored some points. But then our Achilles heel showed up."
That Achilles heel showed up in the form of a three-minute dry spell which launched a game-changing 11-0 Grizzly run. That spurt in the middle of the first half put MSU in chase mode the rest of the night.
Montana's firepower proved superior. Mario Dunn scored 15 while Martin Breunig and Brandon Gfeller each scored 10. UM shot 51% from the floor and turned the ball over only eight times. MSU shot just 33%.
Marcus Colbert paced the Bobcats with 17 points, while Stephan Holm scored 13 and Michael Dison 10 on his senior night. Dison's classmate Blake Brumwell grabbed five boards.
Montana claimed the Big Sky regular season crown Saturday, and hosts the Big Sky Tournament next week. MSU finished 7-23 overall, 4-14 in the Big Sky. UM is 18-11, 14-4.
