MSU sends seniors out with memorable win
It was a good Friday for the Bobcat men's tennis team.
Seniors Diego Campos and Markus Schleuter recorded singles wins in the final home matches of their careers to lead Montana State to a 4-3 win over Eastern Washington at the Bobcat-Anderson Tennis Center. The victory means the winner of Sunday's Cat-Griz match in Missoula finishes second in the Big Sky standings and grabs the second seed – and a bye to the semifinals – in next week's conference tournament in Sacramento.
But on Friday, all that mattered was the task at hand. Successful completion of that task extended the Bobcats' home win streak to a dozen matches, which covers head coach Jared Burnham's two seasons at MSU.
"We got through it," Burnham said. "I thought we played pretty well. We were maybe a little tentative on big points, but overall I was very happy."
Eastern Washington's Robert Dula and Luke Thompson got the Eagles off to a fast start, winning a grueling 8-7 (7-5 tie-breaker) match to clinch the doubles point for EWU. Dula and Thompson trailed Niklas Brandes and Harry James 4-1 in that match before storming from behind.
Eastern jumped ahead 2-0 when Dula beat Brandes 6-4, 6-0 at No. 1 singles. Then, Javier Martin Morillas came back from down a break in each set to post a 6-3, 6-4 win, and Schleuter followed with a 6-2, 6-4 triumph to boost the Bobcats to square the match at 2-2. Harry James followed with a 6-4, 6-4 win to boost the Bobcats to within a match of victory.
"Javy could have gone away pretty easily," Burnham said, indicating that Martin Morillas showed good focus at crucial points during the comeback effort. "It was a matter of him sticking with it, and maybe getting down actually helped him get focused and stay motivated because when he got down a break in both sets he didn't lose a game from there on out. He got down 3-1 and won 6-3, got down 4-1 and won 6-4."
That series of wins put the onus on senior Campos and Kenny Dodd, and Campos delivered. He rolled to a dominant 6-1, 6-0 win at No. 5 singles to clinch the match. "It was fun that Diego clinched," Burnham said. "He's pretty banged up, but didn't look like it today."
The win raised MSU's record to 11-6 overall and 7-2 in Big Sky play this year, while Eastern fell to 8-12 overall, 4-5 in the conference. Montana State battles the Grizzlies for second place on Sunday, while the Eagles need a win over Montana on Saturday to qualify for the Big Sky Tournament. The Cat-Griz match begins at 2 pm Sunday in Missoula.
