Bobcats Begin Big Basketball Weekend with Trip to Flagstaff

MSU, Lumberjacks get together in crucial conference clash
After nearly six months, Montana State's 2013-14 men's basketball season boils down to three days.

That rush to the regular season finish line begins in ominous surroundings Thursday when the Bobcats visit Flagstaff for a 6:35 pm contest at Northern Arizona. Montana State (14-15 overall, 9-9 in Big Sky play) faces a red-hot Lumberjacks team (13-16, 10-8) fresh off a road sweep of Idaho State and league-leading Weber State.
"NAU is playing really well right now," said Bobcat coach Brad Huse. "It's a different team than the one we played at the beginning of January, and they must have a lot of confidence after last weekend."
No player in the Big Sky had a better weekend than Quinton Upshur did on NAU's recent road trip. The 6-5 junior scored 54 points with five rebounds, three steals and an assist in the two Lumberjacks victories. That performance included eight three-pointers in the win at Idaho State.
To some degree, Upshur has been at it throughout the league season. He is fifth in the Big Sky in scoring, netting 17.7 points a game. He leads a versatile attack that features solid play in the backcourt (Kris Yanku averages 3.1 assists a game) and up front (Max Jacobsen shoots 58.5% from the floor, Gaellan Bewernick averages 5.3 boards a game).
Montana State visits a site that has provided the team little comfort through the years. MSU is 14-31 against the Lumberjacks in Flagstaff, and have lost 11 of their last trips to Flagstaff, a span which includes games in both the Rolle Center and the Walkup Skydome. Thursday's game is in the Skydome.
This weekend's games – MSU also visits Sacramento State on Saturday, while NAU hosts Montana – stand as crucial for both teams. While the Lumberjacks are on solid footing in terms of entry into the conference's post-season tournament – one home win this weekend will likely clinch a spot – the Bobcats are fighting to extend their season. A weekend split would require some help to push the Cats into the post-season.
Thursday's game will be replayed on Friday at 8 pm on Fox Sports Arizona, although live video of the game is available only at www.watchbigsky.com.
