Blake Brumwell, Danny Robison among those showing well for Cats
All five UCLA starters scored in double-digits and the Bruins used a 27-5 first-half scoring run to take control in a 113-78 win over Montana State in Pauley Pavilion late Friday.
An NCAA Tournament Sweet 16 team last season, UCLA shot 57.4% from the floor and turned the Bobcats over 22 times in controlling most of the contest. Norman Powell led all scorers with 25 points, Kevon Looney added 20, and head coach Steve Alford's son Bryce chipped in 18 points and a dozen assists.
Danny Robison and Michael Dison each scored 14 for the Bobcats, while Marcus Colbert added 12 and Blake Brumwell 10.
The Bobcats started strong in head coach Brian Fish's first outing, jumping out to an 8-5 lead on Marcus Colbert's three-pointer almost three minutes into the game. UCLA's decisive run began with single free throws by Powell and Looney, and a pair by Noah Allen. In fact, UCLA's next six points came from the line, and the Bruins went three-and-a-half minutes without a basket.
But the Bobcats' inability to keep UCLA off the line was a theme of the night. The Bruins shot 40 free throws, converting 26 of them, while sending MSU to the line just 17 times. Powell (12-for-15) and Looney (11-for-17) did most of the damage.
MSU's two big men performed well in expanded roles. Robison's 14 points marked a career high, and his five rebounds was the junior forward's most in a Division I non-league game since his freshman season. Brumwell's 10 points were his most since 2012-13, and in fact he tallied just 22 as a junior last season. His five rebounds matched his second-highest output against Division I competition.
Montana State's season-opening road trip continues on Monday, when the Cats travel to Phoenix for a tilt against Grand Canyon, picked to finish second in the WAC. Tipoff is 7 pm.
