Bobcat Women’s Tennis Team Posts Strong Day at Regionals

“We had a very solid day in doubles,” MSU Head Coach Denise Albrecht said. “We had a nice win over another Big Sky Conference school, and another against a good Mountain West Conference team. I thought everyone did a nice job playing sound, consistent tennis.”
The Montana State women's tennis team posted a strong opening day at the 2014 USTA/ITA Regional Championship hosted by the University of New Mexico, Wednesday afternoon. The tournament concludes the non-traditional portion of the Bobcat schedule.
In doubles play, the tandem of Wanda Holopainen and Laura Middel combined for an 8-3 win over Northern Colorado's Chrissie Hoolahan and Hilary Walters-West. The duo will play the No. 4 Utah tandem of Bekerova/Kovarcikova, Thursday afternoon.
In addition, MSU received an 8-6 win via Angelina Phillipova and Jessica Brycki. The Bobcat combo defeated Colorado State's Maddie Buxton and Laia Hernandez. Montana State's final doubles pairing of Naomi Holopainen and Molly Crum dropped an 8-4 decision to UNLV's Mercedes Lopez and Paola Artiga.

In singles action, Phillipova, a true-freshman, garnered MSU's only win with a 6-4, 6-3 decision over UNC's Beth Coton. Another Bobcat newcomer, Naomi Holopainen, went the distance before dropping a 6-2, 3-6, 6-4 match to Nevada's Juliette Legendre.
"Angie did a super job and we had some challenging matches," Albrecht said. "We have a very young squad, and it's nice to see them gaining confidence and experience."
In other singles play Wanda Holopainen dropped a hard-fought 7-5, 7-5 decision to Nevada's Clarisse Treand, while Crum fell 6-1, 6-1 to Colorado State's Mollie Cooper, Brycki to Wyoming's Nastya Tokareva 6-1, 6-2 and Middel to New Mexico State's Rimpledeep Kaur 6-0, 6-3.
Both singles and doubles action will take place on Thursday.
