Bobcats look for bounce-back after Thursday's loss at Weber State
Just short of a year ago, Montana State got a screening of Back to the Future against Idaho State in Pocatello's Reed Gym. The Bobcats hope Saturday night doesn't offer a sequel.
MSU Game Notes vs. ISU
Idaho State handed the Bobcats a 36-point whipping, 87-51, on Valentine's Day 2013, which matched the Bengals' biggest margin of victory against the Bobcats. Ironically, that game came one day short of 36 years after ISU's previous 36-point win over Montana State, which also came in Reed Gym.
Bobcat coach Brad Huse knows what can befall a team once the Bengals get rolling. "They really play off the emotion of the crowd in that building," Huse said. "That is a very talented team that is committed to playing well on the defensive end. They have a ton of experience, and it will be a big challenge."
Both teams look to quickly turn the page from a disappointing Thursday. While the Bobcats fell to preseason favorite and league-leading Weber State 86-57 in Ogden, Idaho State coughed up a nine-point halftime lead in a 59-54 home loss to Montana.
The Bengals employ a three-guard attack with Tomas Sanchez, Chris Hansen and Andrew Hatchett that not only poses matchup problems physically – all three stand either 6-3 or 6-4, giving ISU an edge at all three spots in either size or quickness – but which offers ISU coach Bill Evans a full complement of skills. The perimeter trio possesses the ability to penetrate, pass, and shoot both mid-range and long-range jumpers.
The Bobcats, meanwhile, look to slow down ISU after Weber State clicked on all cylinders offensively Thursday. All five Wildcat starters scored in double-digits, and WSU shot 62.2% from the floor. That is the best mark an opponent has shot against MSU since last February, when Weber shot 64%. The Wildcats also shot 45.5% from the arc, and 83% from the line.
After Saturday's overnight return trip to Bozeman, the Bobcats get the week to prepare for a weekend contest at Southern Utah. MSU and the Thunderbirds play in Cedar City on Saturday before the Bobcats complete their odyssey by flying back to Bozeman on Sunday to face a well-rested Montana team not forced to play on Saturday.
