Bobcat Golf Heads Back to Ocotillo

MSU opens play at 2013 Big Sky Golf Championship on Sunday
The Montana State women's golf team opens post-season play this weekend at the Big Sky Conference Championship in Chandler, Arizona. The 54-hole event will be contested Sunday-Tuesday on the par 72, 6,169 yard layout at the Ocotillo Golf Course.
Scheduled to compete for the Bobcats are Paige Crawford, Molly Dorans, Kelly O'Brien, Kati Greear and Pamela Calderon Rojas. Montana State returns three of the five members from last season's lineup for the conference championship tournament. Crawford finished 15th overall and Dorans placed 18th. O'Brien closed out last year's tournament in 32nd place.
All 11 Big Sky teams will compete at the tournament, including Montana State, Montana, Idaho State, Portland State, Northern Colorado, Southern Utah, Eastern Washington, North Dakota, Weber State, Sacramento State, and Northern Arizona.
The Bobcats will look to improve on a seventh-place finish from a season ago and sixth-place in 2011. MSU's two seniors are excited for the opportunity to compete one last time at Ocotillo. “I've had so much fun playing golf for MSU and it would be awesome for the team to finish well,” mentioned Dorans. “I look forward to ending my career as a Bobcat on a high note,” added O'Brien.
“We all are very excited and know the course pretty well. I'm going to go out there hit the ball and see what can happen,” said Crawford who will be leading the Bobcats and competing in her third Big Sky Golf Championship.
The Ocotillo Golf Course has become a familiar sight for the Bobcats, as it will be the fourth time this year MSU will compete in Chandler. “Ocotillo is a golf course we've played many times over the last four years and I feel very comfortable out there,” said O'Brien. “I am excited to get down there and play one last time. I hope that all the work and mental preparation over the past four years will pay off for the team and myself. I have faith that if we all play our best we can do something great,” added Dorans.
Making their first Big Sky Conference tournament appearance, junior Calderon Rojas and freshman Greear had this to add, “I am looking forward to going back to Ocotillo, I love the golf course. We have been practicing hard and are determined to do our best,” said Calderon Rojas. “I'm excited for the weather and I think we can play well at Ocotillo,” added Greear.
“The team is looking good. We have had some challenges dealing with the weather, but I feel these ladies are ready to play. We need to all play well at the same time and have a good first round,” said head coach Brittany Basye.
This will be the fifth straight year the tournament will be played at the Ocotillo Golf Resort in Chandler. Northern Colorado is the defending team champion, and senior Carleigh Silvers is the defending individual champion.
Tee time is at 6:30 a.m. Sunday. All three days will have live results available at www.golfstat.com.
