Bobcats Pick Up Weekly Honors to Kick Off Championship Week
The 2013 Big Sky Conference Indoor Track and Field Championships are just days away and the Bobcats took advantage of a strong week of competition to have two of their own named Athletes of the Week by the conference on Tuesday.
Heather Demorest earned her first weekly honor of her career after a big week in the 3,000 at the Bobcat Open on Friday, Feb. 15, in Bozeman. Her time of 9:40.59 earned her a first place finish in the event and an impressive lifetime best time. The Darby, Mont. native knocked off nearly 20 seconds from her previous best and won the race 30 seconds ahead of the next finisher.
Demorest shares the honors with Shemelle Pless of Northern Arizona.
David Phillips, who has received the Big Sky nod on at least two other occasions, won the weight throw at the Bobcat Open with a personal best distance of 20.38m (66-10.50). The win marked his fifth in a row and he now ranks 18th in the nation in the event. Phillips' last non-first place finish dates back to the Washington Last Chance meet, where he placed second in 2011.
Both Phillips and Demorest will compete at the Big Sky Championships which begin Thursday, Feb. 21 at Brick Breeden Fieldhouse.
