MSU looks to build on big weekend win at Portland
Montana State plays its last home non-conference men's basketball game of 2013 on Thursday, hosting Southwestern Christian at 7 pm in Worthington Arena.
For Bobcat coach Brad Huse, the Eagles present another opportunity for his team to hone its game as the Big Sky Conference season nears. "We need to continue to work on executing at both ends of the floor," Huse said. "We want to improve each time out, to tighten things up offensively and continue to work as a team on defense."
Montana State sandwiches Thursday's game against Southwestern Christian, an NAIA squad out of Oklahoma, between Sunday's win at Portland and a December 23 trip to UTEP. Huse said the Eagles present a challenge. "This is a solid team coming off a good win" on Tuesday against Oklahoma City, 82-79. In fact, Southwestern Christian stands 5-3 on the season and has won two straight.
The Bobcats put together an impressive outing Sunday, handling a Portland squad which had previously posted a cross-city win over Big Sky member Portland State 72-69. Marcus Colbert and Flavien Davis each scored 19 points to pace MSU, and Colbert's outing earned him Big Sky Co-Player of the Week honors with Northern Colorado's Tate Unruh. Colbert added seven assists, six boards and three steals.
The Bobcats' level of play has elevated on the defensive end. MSU is now up to fourth in the Big Sky in scoring defense (69.6 points a game), sixth in field goal defense (.456), and fifth in three-point defense (.456). MSU is also third in steals, with 7.3 a game.
Colbert leads the Bobcats with 11.2 points a game and 31 assists, and his 10 steals is tied for team honors. Senior forward Flavien Davis' return to form after an early-season injury has helped. He averages 10.6 points a game, while senior center Paul Egwuonwu chips in with 9.3 points but is among the Big Sky leaders with 8.4 boards per outing.
Southwestern Christian is led by Reggie Sloan, a sophomore who averages 14.5 points a game and is second on the team with 26 assists. Junior guard Tyler Turner scores 14.3 points a game with 29 assists, while Marc Traylor chips in 13 points an outing. The Eagles average 87.6 points a contest, but allow 92.3.
