Bobcat Women Face Cowgirl Hoopsters

The Montana State women's basketball tedam will open its 2013-14 road season at Wyoming on Friday night.

* The Bobcats and Cowgirls will be meeting for the 16th time dating back to their first encounter on Jan. 3, 1980, which MSU won 76-68. Wyoming has won the last two contests, including a 68-60 decision over MSU last December in Worthington Arena. Ashley Brumwell paced the Bobcats with 23 points, while Kaitlyn Mileto guided the Cowgirls with 15 points. The Bobcats lead 10-5 in the all-time series.
* MSU opened its 2013-14 campaign with an 85-69 win over Cal State Northridge. Junior Kalli Durham led the Bobcats with 21 points, while Ashley Brumwell added 14, Jasmine Hommes 12, and Margreet Barhoum 10. For the game, MSU shot 43 percent from the field and hit a very respectable 25-29 (86%) at the line.
* Last winter, the Bobcats posted a 17-13 overall mark and an 11-9 Big Sky Conference slate. The 2012-13 season marked MSU's fifth straight winning campaign and its seventh consecutive Big Sky Tournament appearance.
* All eleven players on MSU's 2013-14 opening day roster were members of the Bobcat women's basketball program last season. Montana State's only freshman is redshirt Margreet Barhoum.
* Entering her ninth season with the Bobcats, Tricia Binford is Montana State's all-time winningest coach with 121 career victories.
* In its 85-69 win over Cal State Northridge on Sunday, the Bobcats started out strong to open both the first and second half. MSU opened the first half on an 8-0 run and the second period with an 11-3 attack.
* With the new emphasis on contact, free throw shooting will take on more importance than ever before. Against Cal State Northridge, MSU got the job done at the line going 25-29 (86%) from the stripe. Kalli Durham (8-8), Ashley Brumwell (6-6), Jasmine Hommes (2-2) and Lindsay Stockton (2-2) all were perfect in their attempts.
* Bobcat head coach Tricia Binford will take her opening day assist/turnover ratio any day of the week. MSU dished out 21 assists on 27 field-goals, led by Ashley Brumwell with five assists. Montana State committed just eight turnovers, while forcing the Matadors into 18 miscues.
* All ten players dressed for the CS Northridge game scored. MSU received 24 points from its bench, led by Barhoum 10, and Emily Allen with six points and three assists.
* With the clock winding down in regulation, a three-point field goal by senior Kaylee Hoffman gave the Wyoming Cowgirl basketball team a 73-70 win over the Denver Pioneers on Tuesday night.
* It was the Cowgirl seniors who led the way in the victory. Fallon Lewis recorded a career high 17 points along with a team high nine rebounds. She was followed by Chelan Landry with a career high 14 points while shooting 10-11 from the free throw line. Kayla Woodward recorded 13 points and six rebounds in her effort. Wyoming shot 23-62 (.371) from the field and 22-29 (.759).
* Kaitlyn Mileto, Fallon Lewis and Kayla Woodward are all averaging double-digits at 17.5, 15.0, 14.0 ppg, respectively.
* On the season, Wyoming is shooting 40 percent from the field, 30% from 3-point.
* The Wyoming Cowgirl basketball team was picked to finish second according to the Mountain West preseason women's basketball poll. The Cowgirls were 24-8 overall and 12-4 MWC play last winter.
A FULL PLATE:
Montana State senior Ashley Brumwell has a lot on her plate. In addition to her playing gig, the fifth-year senior is also student teaching at Bozeman High School in the math department. Brumwell (formerly Albert) had a tremendous opening day for the Bobcats, recording 14 points and a team-high eight rebounds and five assists. Last winter, she started 28-of-30 games and averaged 8.8 points per game.
ENERGIZER BUNNY:
Junior Jackie Elliott was a woman on a mission in the opener against CS Northridge running well on both ends of the floor. An outstanding all-around athlete, she posted nine points, five rebounds and two assists versus the Matadors. Elliott, who was the 2010-11 Montana Gatorade Soccer Player of the Year and a 16-time All-State Academic honoree as a prepster, is majoring in Bio-Engineering.
FROM THE TOWN THAT MADE VIOLET BEAUREGARDE FAMOUS:
Miles City, Montana product and junior guard Kalli Durham got off to a great start in the season-opener leading the Bobcats with a team-high 21 points, just two points shy of her career-high 23 point out-put against Clemson last November. Against the Matadors, Durham connected on five-of-11 from the field, including a three-of-five effort from long distance and an eight-of-eight afternoon from the charity stripe. In addition, she hauled down four rebounds and chipped in two assists and two steals. Durham had 16 double-figure scoring games, last winter.
ALL IN THE FAMILY:
Jasmine Hommes made her first career start against Cal State Northridge on Sunday. The 6-1 post player from Lynden, Wash., finished with 12 points on five-of-nine from the field. She also recorded three rebounds, two steals and one assist in 21 minutes of action. Hommes is the niece of former Bobcat and Big Sky MVP Blythe Hommes-Hintz and former MSU and Big Sky All-Conference performer Brooke Hommes-Svendsen. Hommes' aunts made a combined 130 starts for the Bobcats- Blythe Hommes-Hintz 78 - Brooke Hommes-Svendsen 52.
BABY TALK:
After taking last year off on maternity leave, junior point-guard Ausha Cole has returned to the Bobcat starting line-up. Cole, who ran into early foul trouble against CS Northridge, finished with five points and three assists. As a sophomore, the Mesa, Ariz., native averaged 3.8 points and 2.1 rebounds per game. Her biggest fan, Kadence, will be celebrating her first birthday on Tuesday, Nov. 19.
STOCK AND DAWK:
Sophomore guard Lindsay Stockton notched two points, a rebound, an assist and a steal against Cal State Northridge. Hampered by foul trouble see saw just nine minutes of action. Sophomore forward Alexa Dawkins saw 18 minutes of action and tallied four points, while hauling down six rebounds and dishing out three assists against the Matadors. The Bobcat duo hails for a strong athletic lineage. Lindsay is the daughter of legendary NBA Hall of Famer John Stockton, while mother Nada played volleyball at Gonzaga. Dawkins' father Dale played football on the University of Miami's 1987 National Championship team. Dawkins later went on to play wide receiver for the New York Jets from 1990-93.
THE THUNDER FROM DOWN UNDER:
Senior forward Emily Allen from Gold Coast, Queensland, Australia came off the bench to record six points and three assists. The year-year letterwinner connected on three-of-six from the field. Allen also added a rebound in 16 minutes of action.
FOR WHOM THE BELL TOLLS:
Redshirt freshman Margreet Barhoum came off the bench a gave the Bobcats a major boost in its win over Cal State Northridge. With two guards in foul trouble, Barhoum scored all ten of her points in the first half, hitting two 3-pointers and converting four-of-six at the free throw line. Barhoum finished the game playing 16 minutes and adding an assist and a steal.
DeNOTE ON DeWIT:
Montana State sophomore center saw seven minutes of action - the most of her career in the Blue and gold - and posted two points, while pulling down three rebounds.
BUELLER, BUELLER, BUELLER:
Sophomore Peyton Ferris, who averaged 2.4 points and 2.0 rebounds last winter, is sidelined with a leg injury. She is listed as day-to-day.
