Montana State’s cold shooting, coupled by a 38-17 shortfall from the free throw line wasn’t enough to overcome a 10-point halftime deficit as the Cowgirls recorded a 72-62 win over the Bobcat women’s basketball squad, Friday night in front of 3,505 fans in the Arena Auditorium.

Montana State's cold shooting, coupled by a 38-17 shortfall from the free throw line wasn't enough to overcome a 10-point halftime deficit as the Cowgirls recorded a 72-62 win over the Bobcat women's basketball squad, Friday night in front of 3,505 fans in the Arena Auditorium.

"We'll use it as a learning lesson," said MSU head coach Tricia Binford. "We need to be more disciplined on the defensive end. They went to the line twice as much as we did and we were not able to get into any kind of flow or rhythm."

Montana State (1-1) found momentum early, staking a 9-2 lead in the first four minutes of the game behind six points via sophomore Jasmine Hommes. Wyoming (3-0) used a 12-0 run midway through the period and built its largest lead at 37-22 at the four-minute mark. MSU closed the margin to 41-31 at intermission.

"I really liked the way we started," Binford said. "It was the second straight game that we got off to a quick start. Our kids are dong a nice job of being prepared and ready to go from the opening tip."

The Cowgirls held a double-digit lead for most of the second stanza, before the Bocbats were able to whittle the deficit to 64-58 with 3:11 remaining on a Lindsay Stockton layup.

Wyoming responded with two quick baskets and held on to the margin down the stretch.

"I think we showed a lot of character overcoming adversity," Binford said. "Our shots weren't falling and Wyoming was getting to the line. We struggled to finish, but our fight showed us that we have a lot of good things ahead of us."

For the game, MSU shot 31 percent from the field. The Bobcat defense did its job limiting the Cowgirls to 32 percent, but couldn't overcome a 21 attempt deficit at the line.

"Both Ausha (Cole) and Ashley (Brumwell) were in early foul trouble, and those are two kids we need to have on the floor," Binford said. "Our bench came in and did a nice job."

MSU was paced by Jackie Elliott and Cole, who recorded 11 and 10 points, respectively. Defensively, the Bobcats were led under the glass by Kalli Durham with a team-high 10 rebounds.

Wyoming had four players in double-digits led by Kayla Woodward with 17 points and 15 rebounds.

MSU will host MSU Billings, Wednesday, Nov. 20 at 7 p.m. in Worthington Arena.
